So i have decided to buy a 308 to replace an old gun as my main deer hunting rifle i have done a lot of research on different bolt guns and came up with a long list. I chose mainly by style and weight and before i actually go to the gun shop and decide which one feels best i would like to get some input and peoples opinions on my choices. I narrowed it down to:

Ruger M77 hawkeye compact black laminate
Tikka T3 Laminate
Kimber 84M classic stainless
Browning X-Bolt Hunter

I would just like to hear peoples experiences with these guns or any disadvantages. Mainly i hunt from a tree stand so shots are usually 100 yards or less.

Thanks

Any of guns you have listed will work well for you 308 is a great cartridge.

I'd go with the T3, but would consider the walnut Hunter model as well. Too much plastic on the Lite models.

It comes with a detachable mag, is quite accurate out of the box, has an adjustable trigger, smooth action, priced reasonably. Good rifles all around. I've had a couple and liked them both.

X-bolt is nice!

Greetings, I do scope adjustments at my local range so I get my hands on many models. One that really impressed me this year is the Browning X-Bolt. The trigger is crisp and light (and adjustable!), the free floated barrel is good for accuracy, it's light and I found the recoil pad to be quite effective.

In fact I am looking into buying one myself!

My 2 cents.

Kimber is nice....but I would choose the Ruger compact (surprise ;) ) or a shorter Model 7. Short ranges like that, and since you will likely be shooting from a rested position 99% of the time, there is no need to have a longer barrel. Sure you will loose some FPS, but at less than 200 yards you (or the animal) will not be able to tell a difference :)

I carry a T3 Battue Lite 20 in barrel in 308 with a Leopold 1X4 scope. Very light and accurate, not an inxepensive setup though.

This spring I was deciding between a savage american classic 114 and a tike t3 light in 30-06. I went for the american classic, which I love, but I can't stop thinking about the tikka. It's lighter and seemed to fit my shoulder better. The triggers are both very very good but I give tikka the nod there because it's lighter (the accutrigger comes set at it's lowest weight). The savage shoots 180g fantastic (1" at 100yd), did badly with cheap american eagle 150g. It has a 1:10 rate of twist which wants heavier/longer bullets.

I'd say tikka, but based only on handling and playing with them, I've never owned or shot one.

I wouldn't get hung up on a modle or caliber. Keep an eye on the exchange here, and the used racks wherever you go. There are some nice rifles floating around. If I had my pick, I'd get a Rem laminated stainless mountian rifle in 7mm-08.

+1 on the model seven in .308. Mine is in stainless with a 20" barrel though (older models had the 18.5") I just wish mine was in wood. I've grown tired of plastic.

Go through the remington custom shop and get one in fullstock. Beautiful gun.

My choice would be the Ruger, but any such choice is more a matter of personal preference rather than it is a question of quality. All of the rifles mentioned will work, but my preference is uncluttered ejection ports, claw extractors, and bolts that can be disassembled without a great deal of fuss.

You ill, Mr. Remington? The T3?:p:)

.308 is a great round for deer and moose.

Stainless with synthetic stock is very practical combination for all weather hunting.

Make sure you find something light (eg. sub 7 pounds) that fits your shoulder well.

Have fun!

"...which one feels best..." Exactly. Then buy based on price.

great choice 308 & 6.5 swede are what i use my sugestion on your choice is the tikka well priced light weight and very acurate, the ruger mk77 although a well built gun and rugged they don't seem to do very well on group size but will bring down your deer but maybe you wont be as confident in the loger shots as you might be with the tikka. personaly i shoot tikka and CZ rifles for hunting and am a true believer, here is a pic of a CZ550 fs 308 like the one i have and maybe you might consider it
