308 moose load

An almost "traditional" moose load, back in the day, was Dominion / Imperial 215 KKSP from 303 British. Was the "preferred" loading, back then. I doubt moose have evolved to need more - so about anything like that? I never have taken a moose, but two elk were taken with 165 Speer HotCor from our 308 Win - is our "about standard" loading for that rifle. Pass a bullet through the ribs, or into the ribs, and pretty much is all done. When my Dad passed, among his stash of goodies was two rounds left from years ago moose hunt - was 200 grain (?) KKSP for his 30-06. I saw him take several elk with 165 grain factory Federal loads in his 30-06 - so all would work, I think?

In conventional non magnum cartridges I think an exotic bullet is not a requirement....conventional 180grain bullets like remington hornady and speer are fine....move up to magnum speeds and the more exotic bullets shine....take your time with moose, they die slow....I have often put a second shot into moose because I was just not patient enough to wait a few seconds longer...most moose I have shot with a 300 win mag and 180gr partitions...I think 308 is on the light side as is 270 etc but many moose have been killed by 30-30s and 6.5 swedes in the hands of good patient shooters.....30-06 with a 200grain bullet is a fine moose round also....

I'll have to agree, a good 150-168gr projectile will get the job done.

Nos PT, AB
Barnes TSX/TTSX
Hornady IB, BTSP (the new ECX looks interesting)

All good choices, if you can find them in todays retail climate.

What’s everyone’s favourite 308 moose load?
Have a buddy using 308 for moose and looking for ideas to load him hunting ammo

A thought - what has he been using until now? Replicate that, if you are going to load for him - else his next failure will be "your fault" due to your "crappy reloads". I have been there, went through it - why I no longer make loads for other people. They can use my stuff and build their own loads - I will teach them. I found it remarkable (not!!) how often they had no money for buying components or "no time" to test, try out and actually "work up" a batch.

Not certain that there is an "Easy Button" for "good loads" - been looking since mid-1970's and not finding it. Recently bought some Norma factory .308 Norma Match, Ball 168 grains - from what I have seen so far, not real sure that I have the "know-how" to replicate that stuff on 300 yard targets.

He’s new to moose hunting so I am looking for a base line to start from
I use a 7 rem mag with 150ttsx or 160 partitions but have no experience with 308 on moose

Well iff’in the mighty terdy-turdy had no problem, the .308 win should be right at home.
I’d be more concerned wid dem jitters.

My .308 shoots clover leafs with 150 gr. Shotgun patterns with anything else , find what your rifle likes and buy a decent quality bullet . Then put the biscuit in the basket .

I've never been moose hunting ,but looking forward this fall to a trip to Newfoundland for moose.Im planning on taking my new tikka t3 in.308, and plan to use the hornady american whitetail 165 grain ammunition for moose.I have some friends who hunt moose every season and they use this ammo with excellent results out of.308 and 30-06.

My lovely wife of 54 years has perhaps killed more moose than most hunters have ever seen. She is an excellent shot and has used a little Ruger RSI 308 Winchester for the past 30+ years.

Most have been taken with a single shot using plain vanilla 180gr bullets at 2500 out of that short barrel.

As most of you here know, moose are not hard to kill. That could be why the meat is so good. They die quickly, and rarely run off charged up with adrenaline.

Hi! I am a reloaded and I find out that the construction of the bullet is the most important. I once had a bullet explode on the shoulder of a moose and not penetrate. Since then, I use Nosler Partition. They stay together and penetrate well.

Why did you hit it in the shoulder?

That's exactly what I used in Nfld last year to harvest a cow. The ammo (Hornady American Whitetail 165gr in 308 Win) worked as advertised. I had tried some 180gr rounds but my rifles didn't like the heavier bullets as well.
