308 Norma Mag or 300 H&H Mag??

You're gonna have problems with that 1-12 twist and bullets over 180 gns, unless you can drive them up in the 3200 fps bracket...........have you considered a 300 Wby? Were it not for the 1-12 twist I'd have to add a vote for the H&H offering, as it just reeks of nostalgic history and given no magazine restriction there is absolutely no down side. H&H brass is out there, not real common but certainly obtainable, and if not there is Nosler and R-P 300 Wby brass that becomes H&H with one pass through the die. Norma is easily made from 300 WM and of course there is gobs of that available. My vote is still the H&H though, just stick to 165-180 grners and you should be fine.

From a practical standpoint, the 300WinMag is the best of the bunch.

Perhaps that lack of practicality is part of the draw for me, or at least it would seem to be so by some of my calibre choices. A number of them seem to be off of the;) 'beaten path'.
- 219 Donaldson Wasp
- 7x61 Sharps & Hart
- 308 Norma Magnum
- 348 Winchester
- 358 Norma Magnum
- '.366 Wagner':)
- 375 Chatfield Taylor;)

I agree with what you say. :)

Yes there is a draw to something in nice walnut, with a oddball chambering. Personally i am working on a project 308 NM, was stupid and sold a nice one a few years ago. Broke my own rule and am now way over my limit of two reloader only rifles. As much as its great to have a "my rifle" that very few would have, there is also a appeal for a synthetic stocked buy your ammo at Walmart kinda gun.

Ouch....did i say that....talk about the 300 WSM and synthetic chevrolet rifles in a fuddy...cadilac sorta thread....Dons flame suit.

Stainless, while not my #1 choice, I do have a couple stainless and wood, and admittedly have one  stainless and 'tupperware' example. While I can appreciate those in the field weather resistance qualities, they're not for me. Blued steel and nicely figured wood are my #1 pick.

Limiting myself to the two choices in your original question, I'd point out that the NM is definitely the "better" cartridge, if you think you need a "fast" .300. I think that the .300WinMag is fast enough for anything that I want to do with it, so I don't really have any interest in the Norma cartridge...but the H&H has style, panache, charm, chutzpah, class and coolness, all in one cartridge. It's the obvious choice. If I didn't have my Ruger #1 in .300H&H (26-inch barrel...drool...), I'd be jealous of your B78...

On the other hand, the Norma round is the sort of thing that Gatehouse would choose...'nuff said. :)

You're gonna have problems with that 1-12 twist and bullets over 180 gns, unless you can drive them up in the 3200 fps bracket........

Now I hadn’t thought about that....I will run a twist test to verify what I found on the net. I like the 200's for their SD/BC and the longer necks on the 308NM/300H&H vs the shorter neck on the 300WM. Technically....the longer neck is better for accuracy. Can any animal tell the difference??...not likely. Can I tell the difference...again not likely. I'm leaning towards the H&H now, mostly because of the requirement for a magnum action vs no issues with a single shot.

In my post, #10, my Schultz has a 1-10" twist rate and shows an accuracy fondness for 200gr Sierra BT's.
