My father in law has a 308 norma magnum that I had neck sized cases for. I don't have a 308 NM FL die. Only a custom lee neck size die.

He had a muzzle brake installed, and the gunsmith didnt return headspace to exact spec, but to "within specs".

My previously collet neck sized cases are way too hard to close the bolt on. They will close, but it's hard. Hard to close and open.

I guess that I would just need to bump the shoulder 1-2 thou.

Would it be safe to use a 300 win FL die to bump, or you wouldnt do it?
There is nowhere where you can get a reasonably priced FL die for 308 norma.

Other option would be to just trash those 20 cases and start over with new factory rounds, but at 90$ a box, that's a bit sad.

What would you do?

The 300 Win Mag die will not do the job, since the shoulder is further ahead than that of the 308 Norma.

There is no practical way to bump these shoulders back without the 308 Norma FL die.

You could get some 338 Winchester cases and run them through your neck die. The necks will be a tad short, but will work fine.

Best solution would be new cases, but as you note....expensive.....and hard to find.

Regards, Dave.

The .300 Win shoulder is considerably farther forward than a .308 Norma so it wouldn't work. I didn't know .308 Norma dies were expensive. I've had a set sitting here for 20 years, and I doubt anyone is coming back from the dead to claim them.

Or, like buy a die. Got the gun, got cases, gonna shoot it, sooner or later gonna hafta set shoulders back regardless of necksizing, esp for hunting rounds. Buy the die.

What brand and where should i buy? A fl and seater are more than 100$ and its for my father law.... He doesnt really want to spend a lot. Ill try to buy one used.

ph proline sports in Calgary - they have had a set on the shelf - used for I think $30 for months. Not sure if its still there

or send the cases my way and I can size them as well (already a similar offer out to you .. so now you have two free options!!) lol.

thanks for the members who have offered to size the cases, but I would prefer to get a used die and just be able to do them all locally.

I've trimmed 300 mag casings and run through die
Worked great in my parker hale when I had it
I have a few rounds left here from the gun
If someone needs photos
Send me.a msg with cell # to text or an email
I had to trim the case roughly 1/16"
Then pushed shoulder bac k as far as die Would go
Dies I had were "eagle" dies in 308 norma mag

I use free .300 Win mag Fed range brass in my Browning Safari FN .308NM...........lube lightly .300 Win mag case to where the .308NM shoulder should be,q-tip lube inside of case neck, remove expander button /de-priming pin group from .308NM sizing die. FL size, trim to length, chamfer inside and outside of neck. Then re-assemble die and run through one more time to size the new neck for proper bullet tension.Too much lube will causer oil dents but these will usually iron themselves out when firing.......Harold

Might be a little labor intensive but I would pull the bullets from the cases, find a die in my stash that will "work" (doesn't have to be exact, just close as long as it's smaller
) to size the case smaller ( or knock the shoulder back a smidge, whatever is needed) than the chamber specs. Then load them up again this time with 10 gr of Unique (or any suitable fast pistol powder) and fill to the top with corn meal and fire form the cases in the gun... Guaranteed to fit when loaded next time.

Not the route I would take if a $30 sizing die is found but for a $100, I would do it.

Found a herters die for 45$ shipped.

Are those dies any good? Are they going to work fine? Or I should just try to find an rcbs set?
