308 vs 30-06

For me because most of the deer/moose are whithin the average of max 200y, the .308 is ideal, wiith Hornaday 308 Win 155 GR BTHP STEEL MATCH™ :

I doubt very much the OP will be using any of this sniper-data in his deer rifle.

Here in NB, or anywhere else for that matter, it matter not if you carry a 308 or a 30/06 for every day general hunting. It really comes down more to the choice of type of firearm than anything else.
 
I'm sorry if this has been covered in another post but if you are going to reload; 30-06, and if you are just going to buy factory ammunition; .308. And like previous posters have said; the scope and rifle are more important than your choice of chamber. Can't really go wrong with either for deer or moose. Heavier bullets for the 30-06 are nice but that does not mean the .308 can't do the job.

well 30-06 has one whole extra 0 in it and is therefore 10x better just like 2 and 20 the 20 is 10x better

That being said you'd be served well by either one providing you are using the proper bullet for the job, I doubt bambi or bullwinkle will notice the difference.
 
Mary MacGregor sang this during my senior year in High school regarding the .308Win vs the .30'06 and I have to agree with her,........."Torn between two lover's,......feeling like a fool,........loving both of you,..is breaking all the rules"..........

For military use it makes more sense to use the 7.62 nato (308) with the 150gr class, due to it being more powder efficient, easier to make and you can carry more ammo. For hunting purposes the with heavier bullets the old 30-06 is the better choice.
 
30 or 40 years ago, the '06 had a slight edge, because bullets were not as effective as they are today, so a heavier bullet helped ensure critters were deadified. Nowadays, with the hundreds of choices of premium bullets, even in factory loads, calibers that were marginal at best are now proven game-getters. 40 years ago, if you had told people you hunted moose with a 243, you would have gotten some mighty strange looks, whereas nowadays, it's suitable for moose.

The one thing that no one has mentioned, though, which is best for bear defense - '08 or '06????

Funny thing, all these years on this planet and I have never fired a 30-06 round.
Go figure.
Just 'bout said numero uno on one of those two Howa's in the EE.
Need some s'cewse to bern that reduntant ammo off in the ammo kabbnitt.
 
I own a 30-06. A shooting pal has a 308. I'm not a big game hunter, but he is and he's had no trouble whatsoever taking a couple of Colorado elk in recent years. I like the -06 more for sentimental reasons than anything else. The 308's short action is nice in a bolt rifle, though. I think the real world performance difference between the two is pretty small. My advice (worth what you paid for it) would be to get whichever you may have a slight preference towards.
 
Choosing between the two is more about the rifle than the cartridge. If you like lightweight short actions, .308 is your choice. If you like the feel of a wee bit more weight between your hands, choose a .30-06. IMHO, this is a far more important factor than the very slight difference in ballistics. Myself, I definitely shoot a mid-weight rifle a lot better than I shoot a light-weight -- it just settles faster and more steadily onto the target. And as for the extra bit of weight that makes me carry, I'm a very big fan of the late Bob Hagel, who more than once took the position that if a guy was so out of shape that he absolutely needed to trim a pound off a rifle, he had no business thinking he could pack out a dead animal :)

300wm brass can be 375 ruger also lol ...

but burnt_servo nailed but i still prefer the 9.3x62 brass
