wow, you're right there with Chuck Hawks and Skeeter Skelton
308 became superior to 30-06 just because you bought more than one.

I doubt very much the OP will be using any of this sniper-data in his deer rifle.Norma Brass
Berger 230 OTM .719 BC
61gr H1000
WLRM Primer
2520fps Ditance to chronograph : 16 feet
Barrel length 24"
No pressure signs.
I can use RL25 to push beyond 2600fps but I prefer H1000 for temperature stability.
You can't get this kind of performance from a .308
Actually that can be interpreted in a number of ways. Perhaps Carmel has only one .30/06 because its so good, where as each .308 is lacking in some manner, so he keeps buying more in an attempt to find a good one.![]()
For military use it makes more sense to use the 7.62 nato (308) with the 150gr class, due to it being more powder efficient, easier to make and you can carry more ammo. For hunting purposes the with heavier bullets the old 30-06 is the better choice. The 308 finally is the 30-06 made to perfection... Very simple... JP.

. . .
The one thing that no one has mentioned, though, which is best for bear defense - '08 or '06????
Oh I think everyone who prefers the .308 should use it for bear defense . . . more bears for the rest of us.
Before anyone takes that too seriously, either will work fine, if used correctly.
This. I could not decide between .308 or .30-06, found a 300WM in the model I wanted, used, low price, good condition, bought it.
the 30-06 wins hands down ...... and here is the reason why .....
you can take the brass and fireform it to 9.3x62 and use it in a real rifle .....
you can't do that with a 308........
One advantage of the .308 is that it comes in short actioned rifles. The rest is fluff, IMO.
