308 vs 7mm-08 rem

If you dont plan on reloading then I would say 308.

People always say that 7mm/08 has better ballistics but I have never found that to be the case.I havent experimented around with heavier weight bullets mind you. A 139gr 7mm bullet drops quickly after 250yds. While my 308 experience is limited, I doubt it offers much of a difference over a 308 150gr bullet. The recoil is not a very significant difference between the two.

308 also allows you to buy some cheap ammo to burn off (hirtenberger). I think practicing lots with the firearm is key as you can get over the flinch factor.

I went with the 7mm-08 and reload everything. There something about having that extra steel in the barrel that seems like a good thing.

I have owned both. I've shot whitetail and mule deer with both. I still have a 308. The advantage of the 308 as said before is more trigger time due to more economical ammo. I also think that the 308 is a superior round when moose are on the table.

I have both, actually several of both and don't shoot any of them, so which one collects dust better?................I shot game this year with a 7 RUM and my 300 WSM, oh ya and a blackie this spring with a 350 RM. I personally wouldn't choose either cartridge to hunt with, but such is one of the luxuries of being a gun hoarder. As far as ballistics goes, flip a coin, it doesn't make a rat's a$$ difference which one you use and if you reload it evens the playing field even more. But if you are purchasing ammo to feed the beast then 308 wins hands down for cost and availability. But then given that criteria the 30-06 is a better choice yet and is a better hunting cartridge than either of the ones you asked about.

Not sure why the ballistic nitpicking here.

And to be honest it makes ZERO difference, the performance is so close on these two during hunting situations that it is irrelevant.

Now if you want to say this one drifts this much more in that amount of wind @ 1000 yards with bullet "A" then that is a different math debate.

7-08 makes a hole in game animals as does the .308 , but you will find more .308 ammo available.

Great thread. I'm looking at both these wondering witch to buy.

Since, at least for now, I won't be reloading, I think I agree that .308 will serve me better.

Cheers, Wayne

I chose the 7.08 for two reasons - first, I reload myself so sourcing ammo is not an issue and second, my shoulders are so buggered that recoil was becoming an issue - not for a couple of rounds in a hunting situation, but if I wanted to shoot a few strings my 30 cal stuff was starting to get uncomfortable.

And using typical hunting loads, with an 8'ish pound rifle while the 308 has about 18 pounds of free recoil, the 7.08 is making just a little over 12.

So as noted, with downrange ballistics being close (again in hunting situations), 33% less recoil appealed to me.

308 has more factory options and you can buy cases of it if you want cheap practice ammo.

They are virtually identical in performance on game.

7-08 is way cooler.

I like both..... What I typically do is buy my rifles to platform.... Ie stainless synth tic vs wood and blued.... Full size versus compact etc.....

Either will do the job, but I have a scout in .308 so will likely look for a compact in 7mm-08 to match my .243 or maybe a stainless synthetic all weather...... Vs threads are fun..... But in reality, I want them all..... Lol

7mm-08 is pretty cool!!

I think it was 1992 when I bought my first hunting rifle of my own, it was a 700BDL oil finished stocked.

With that chambering and the locals from these parts I was a celebrity!

I think it is better than the .308, ;)

308, without a doubt.

Debating kills better is pointless. Its like comparing what weight of hammer kills mosquitos better.

308 ammo is literally everywhere that sells ammo, is amongst the cheapest centrefire to feed with hunting bullets.

For all the love for the 308 and it's assertion as the "near perfect caliber" you have to wonder....

I look on EE and in the first three pages I see no less than ten 308's up for sale yet not a single 7.08 - hmmmmm

If these were the perfect rifles, would they be for sale?

Just saying.... :stirthepot2:

I don't recall anyone stating it is the perfect rifle ......

Because for every one 7-08 theres tens of thousands of 308s, if not more.

They arent perfect, but the real world difference in performance the 7-08 offers is so minimal it doesnt outweigh the cost, selection, and availability of ammuntion.

Last night I came across one of the sweetest little rifles I think I've ever seen,..a used, but mint, Model 70 Featherweight Compact in 7mm-08,...I tried to convince the wife that it would be the perfect shooter for her,..she said yes it would but not now,..I told her we have everything at home to reload for it,..but still no dice ,...... ...women ,... they just don't understand, lol.
It was hard to walk away and leave it on the rack,...if Christmas and truck repairs hadn't just sucked up all my play money, that little sweetheart would have had a new home. (the rifle would of had a new home, not the wife, lol)
