308 vs6.5 creedmore

well mostly whitetail

At normal hunting ranges, there is no functional difference between the two. In the broadest of terms; the 6.5 is flatter shooting with somewhat less recoil, and the .308 has more "stopping power" and better availability. Both will kill anything just as dead as the other.

using it for deer i dont do any target i have a tikka 308 and i just seem to keep going back to that but i was thinking about buying the same rifle in 6.5

308 has double the bullet selection. It may kick more because it shoots the same grain bullet faster. I know guys get stuck on 7mm08 but that wasn’t the question, not all guns come in that caliber. Like the Howa super light I’ve been fondling at the store.

Nothing wrong with any of them really, pick the le you want! I think 308 is more versatile!

Most deer are shot under 500yds, so the 308. I have both and hunt with both. Deer just run less far after being hit with 308 in my experience.

I have taken deer at up to 425 yards, repeatedly, for over 20 years with my Husqvarna 25.06.
Bone stock 1969 rifle, factory Winchester high end ammo and plenty of practice, $1800 glass...

None - have - EVER - run - ANYWHERE.....not one...

Well, try shoot some Sika deer, we have guides who would not take clients out on evening stalks with 6.5x55. They were sick of crawling around after the runners. Using the same shot placement as with my 308, my then new 6.5CM disappointed with the running distance. I was advised to use a shot placement slightly further forward (Hilar) and results were better with quite a few dropping on the spot. Heart shot Sika just about all run, seen them run 150m with the heart hanging out.
The 25-06 with lighter faster bullets compared to say 6.5x55/CM works quite well on our little deer at reasonable ranges.

I have a feeling that there is more than the cartridge at fault with Sikas running.
Lot of animals from coyote to moose and elk over here get shot and die right now with both 6.5's you mentioned, but with proper bullet selection and placement .

What do you want to do with it? A hammer is better than a frying pan if you are building a shed but it is terrible if you are trying to fry an egg.

This is the best analogy I've heard in a long long time, I'm gonna have to borrow it.

I have a 6.5CM (rebarrelled rem 788 built to shoot mid range deer etc.) and a 9.3x62.

I feel like I have bases covered for the different hunting needs I have. Took an antelope with the 6.5 the other year at a range that an open site 45-70 wouldn't have had trouble with. Looking to bag some deer with it this season coming.
