I've decided on .308 for me as it comes in both Featherweight and FTR rifles.
- I like the versatility from 110-180 grains and that I can share bullets with the .30-06 when reloading.
- 130 grain TTSX in the .308 displaces the perceived need for a .270, more so in the.30-06, out to 300 yards.
- Also, I have this idea that Trail Boss and .30-30 bullets would be like chocolate and peanut butter.
I like the Creedmoor, but reading tells me the barrel life isn't as good, and it won't make any difference practicing in field positions out to 500 yards. If hunting, I would like to stalk to within about 200 yards, so it wouldn't matter. For bigger stuff close up, I'd rather a 165 TSX or 180 NP.
I'd take the Creedmoor over a .243 anytime as the barrel life is way better. But the .308 is even less overbore. I like the notion of the 6x45mm for the same reason - it seems better balanced between powder charge and bore size.
If mentalizing about moose or elk at 400 yards, I'd much rather a .338 WM with 225 grain TSX anyway. Heavy game at 300 yards would be the .375H&H with say a .270 TSX.
Keeping things simple, I'm down to .223Rem, .308Win/.30-06SPRG, and .375H&H as do-it-all staples. Maybe a .338 WM too. And maybe a .458 WM for 'fun'. Austerity would be just the .308Win/.30-06SPRG and the 375H&H to cover everything from paper to elephant.
