Well, most N.A. game. Would you feel comfortable taking all your antlered species with a .308?
Heck, it's been done with a muzzle loader & a bow and arrow, I myself can't see a huge problem using this cartridge, How about you?

Yes, with the right loads, the right range for the situation/game sought & correct shot placement the .308 Win can certainly do it...

no problem at all. Make my load a 168 grain triple shock @ 2650 fps, and my rifle a nice light Model Seven with a Leupold VXII 2-7x33

The 308 is a capable round....................but as boring as a wart.

What, just because it's not a 303? At least he didn't ask about the 30-06.

If I only had one to pick from, the .308 would certainly be on the list. Primarily because of the data available for reloading and the large selection of firearms chambered for the cartridge.

never mind antlered game- how about all north american game period, with possibly the exception of the big bears- granted , it's on the so-called " bottom" of the spectrum for some of the bigger animals, but a 308/180 can and has killed most species of game in n.a.-since it's nothing more than a "slower" '06, you just have to stalk closer - on the other hand , a 20 shot 308 is a m14/fal/g3 whatever- a 20 shot '06 is a BAR- not that there's anything wrong with that

I have seen .308 take a lion in africa - one shot to put it down, one more to finish it (didnt really need the second shot - but to be kind to the critter). Partition bullet (150 gr i think) 10-20 yds, no big deal. It wasnt charging or anything -- just crouching in the grass about to charge.

As a matter of interest, saw the same with a .280 (not even an Akley). 308 is fine for NA - bear, deer, moose, whatever...... just be good with it. It is kinda vanilla tho when there are so many more interesting choices to make.

I was gonna suggest the 30-30, but that's not my primary hunting rifle.
And I do believe the thuddy-thuddy, has been torn apart already.
My reasons for this thread is becasue I just inherited a Win. model 88/.308
It has the basket weave stock as opposed to the cut checkering.

I remember reading once that 308 was underpowered for moose and elk and this article was recommended it not be used. Bullsh##

308 is an awesome all around round. It seems to have fallen in a little bit of disfavour lately and some people (influenced by gunmakers) grossly underestimate it's stopping power.

308 is the cat's ass

IMHO, you can't go too wrong with anything in the .30 cal standard range. Even for a non-reloader there's choices abound for almost any type of game. Sure, some of them might not be a good idea, but that's where a shooters discretion comes into play. If I could only have one rifle, something in a .308 Win or a 30-06 would more than likely be at the top of the list. Even above my .270, I'd say. But since I'm addicted like alot of people here, I can't have just one.

I love the .308

I'll go with the gang and say it can pretty much do it all.

6.5x55 Swede is still better. :D
But yah I guess it is the next best.

If you already have a 308, use it and enjoy it. With today's modern powder, the 308 can pack more of a punch than the original 30-06 loadings. The 308 is adequate for most North American Game, but not all. I use the 308 for deer on Van. Isle, but use a 30-06 and larger for B.C. interior hunts. Not saying the 308 wouldn't do the job, but I ve got the bigger ones, so I use them. Bigger the Game, the bigger the gun.

Modern day loadings for the 30-06 will give you approx. a 200 fps advantage over the 308. If you're a one rifle hunter, the 30-06 is still one of the best choices.
