.308 Win for everything?

If you compare the .308 and 30-06 at the Remington site, the 150gr Core Lokt Ultra's, yes, you see 200fps and almost 200ftlbs at the muzzle. At 100 yards, it's down to around 100fps and 150ftlbs. The differences close the further out you get. At a 200yd zero, they are almost identical to 300 yards, after which the 30-06 stays a little flatter.
I'm not arguing for or against either, but where is an average hunter going to notice that difference? What elk or moose is going to notice it? Yes, the homeloader has more flexibility, but will that make a decisive decision of one over the other?
IMHO, (and I know I might get some flak for it) these are as identical as you can get. One is just shorter than the other.

The advantage of the 30-06, for the one gun hunter, is the larger case capacity for holding a bit more powder ,and the longer case neck for extra bullet stability with heavier bullets. It really isn't much of a difference until you need that extra bullet weight or just a little more distance. I'd feel more comfortable with large Moose or Big Bears using the 30-06 over the 308.

As I said, there's not a thing wrong with the 308, it's a great cartridge that I myself use regularly. But I use the 30-06 more. If I was limited to owning but one rifle, I would choose the 30-06 over the 308. But as time passes by there's always the opportunity to acquire more rifles in more calibers and we all know you can never have enough guns. After you get more than just a few guns it's hard for your wife to notice the new recruits anyways.

Got both 30-06 and 308. The 06 covers my ass in a bear situation and gives a bit more comfort but the 308 is a Savage 99c and it is Sweet! Plus it is alot lighter than the Ruger bolt to drag around. Not thinking of a magnum. I will load up the 06 instead and be happy with that. The 06 is about all the punch my shoulder will accept these days.

I could hunt with one for the rest of my days, but that would be really boring. I love the big boom of a magnum cartridge and I prefer tough bullets driven hard for bigger stuff.

308 will do whatever you want it to provided you use appropriate loads and have practiced at whatever ranges you are going to shoot at.

I've completely flattened moose with my little Remington model 600 in 308, and that's with the 19" barrel. And the only "bang-flop" I ever saw on big game I did with this little .308 on a real nice cinammon black bear. I was a little hesitant when I first went out with it, but I've taken plenty of moose and bear with it and nothing has ever gotten away, or moved more than two or three paces after I hit it.

There is nothing wrong wth the .308 Dont let the WIZZM guys hear that though...

The 30-06 and 308 have taken a lot of game. the difference is fairly minimal between the 2.

The cartridges based on the .308 case are my favourite.

Well, the 30-30 has taken more grass eaters on this continent then just about all other cartridges combined.

The 30-06 has been used to take just about EVERYTHING on this planet (if not everything).

Think of the 308 as a magnum 30-30 and you can feel comfy knowing you are just deading them. The 308 and a 'normal' 30-06 are the same thing.

However, I prefer the 7-08....

well if you only want 1 rifle I guess a 308 will do.

I'm more in the mindset of golf, you need a different club for each shot, so you really need a different rifle for each situation.

and I think my wife has actually agreed to this :)

or she's just humoring me :( but either way more guns :D

I would use it on any N. American game short of big brown bears. I would have to consider range as well given some animals. I'd take a moose at 400 M with my 300 WSM but might balk at 250 M with a .308 unless I had perfect shot presentation.

Definitely a sweeter shooter then that freakin .300 flinch-maker you are trying to part with on the EE.
I'm gonna keep it fer now, ya never know when I'll need a good pry-bar. Plus the SS bbl. I was look'n at went down in price:dancingbanana:
Besides, I have more shotguns than rifles so I'll trim that herd down 1st;)
And my brother is giving me a pound of H-1000 to try :)
