308 WIN Rifle With Hinged Floor Plate or Internal Magazine

Hinged floorplate on my Winnie Model 70 Fwt Compact .243 for coyotes… I only load 2 rounds anyways. Good luck getting that second shot off at a running yodel dog!!

On my competition rigs, boxed magazines and hopefully in AICS pattern…. That’s a whole other discussion!!

For hunting, I hardly ever toss in 5 boooolits! I’m not that fast, besides I suck at hunting and the deer hardly show up nor stick around. Ha ha ha ha ha

Upside down pictures….. the CGN software must hate me….. :nest:

Cheers!!

I figure yew git wutt you git.
Like the rifle, buyer.
Plawp'n drawp or shuvver down, swing'n drawp.

Just remember wtf yer yews'in.
Long skinny sticks in the bewsh arr nawt rightittly available.

I would look for a kimber 84, 84L or winchester 70, ruger usually has quality parts but they seem to be put together poorly. In the few ruger rifles that I have had they shot horrible until you shave the internal mag box down to not interfere with the action. Then gotta find the torque for the 3 action screws. Then gotta glass bed everything and properly free float the barrel. I even had to adjust the hinged floor plate to close without rattling. Then find what ammo it likes, it gets to be a pain in the ass if you don't have time for all that work or have to pay someone to do that and extra money in ammo while testing to throw down range just to get it to shoot. The M84 and M70 are already put together properly.

I have had rather the opposite experience with Kimbers and Rugers. Winchesters have been and remain solid. I’ve had at least a half dozen kimbers, and three have given me feeding trouble (two Mountain Ascents in .280 AI bought as a pair for work, and a Adirondack .308). I wanted to use them as my client loaner rifles for goat hunting but they gave me a couple too many headaches though I still like them.

Which was a shame as I loved them for the slim CRF actions, stainless, and proper light weight. My client loaner that saw the most miles was a 7x57 Ruger No.1RSI stainless, it just ran, and shot as decently as any other mountain weight rifle. It was popular with the clients, and either I’m not fussy or the Ruger 77s have been plenty good enough and better than most in the function and durability departments. The RSI .308 would be high on my list for the OPs requirements if he can find one.

Same qualities I like about mine. How recent were yours? "The internet" says that recent production has addressed the problems they formerly had...

Speaking of Controlled Round Feed vs Push Feed, what do you guys prefer? I do not plan on hunting dangerous game, ever, so that's not really part of the equation.

CRF isn't only for dangerous game ... It simply provides a near perfect chambering of every round, and in the heat of the moment if you short stroke the bolt, the CRF also prevents double feeds ... CRF is the way to go if you have the option honestly

Swing a dead cat and you'll hit a 308 with a hinged floorplate or a blind mag. Hinged floorplates or blind magazines have to be the majority of bolt action 308 rifles ever made!

I mean, the Model 70 is about as good as it's ever been right now. I also really like the Weatherby Vanguard, which is based on the Howa 1500 action. Currently I have 1 each Model 70 and Vanguard, excellent rifles. The new Weatherby Mark Vs are also really nice, but I don't think you'll find a short .308 in that lineup. Bergara has the B-14, which is a Remington 700 pattern rifle with hunting models carrying a floorplate, and I believe they offer .308 in 18" and 20" barrels depending on the model.

I have an 1986 model 70 in 270 with the factory WinCan stock, owned since new and it was rock solid.
It's just been collecting dust the last 20 years.
I only shoot short action now.

Well... I generally like them, but there are pros and cons.

It's super simple to load as well.

And super quick to unload if the floorplate releases without instructions. I was always paranoid with my hinged floorplate M70, but despite my concern it never let go when I didn't want it to. Unloading was never very tidy though, cartridges always seemed to be trying to get away from me. Maybe the long action design is worse for this than the short action.

I never had an issue, but I only hunted big game with a bolt action once in about 25 or 30 years I think!

I had a nice remington model 7 in 308 win,
i killed quite a few animals with it.
Now i have a savage model 99c in 308
the last 3 years have been good for bear hunting
i now prefer a rifle with a detachable magazine.
As i lost a moose by not having a magazine
all my big game rifles now have detachable magazines.
The last bear i shot , i only had a few seconds to shoot. Thak god for magazines

Hello - what is that rear scope mount / base? I do not recognize that - I have a similar "push feed" Model 70 in 338 Win Mag - I installed the Leupold "Dual Dovetail" mounting system, but do not recognize that rear base set-up? That plate or bar that appears to be installed between the windage adjustment screws does not appear to be attached to that rear ring - perhaps someone milled out a rotary dovetail on that rear base?
