308 Winchester or 270?

The 270 has fallen out of favour in the last few years for the same *solid* reasons that the 6.5 Creedmore is the most popular caliber right now.
Flavour of the month club.

I have owned and used a 270 for almost 50 years and it is a perfectly good caliber. I have never owned a 308 but have friends that use them regularly. I have no prejudice either way and would use either caliber interchangeably.

However, if I was buying my first rifle and budget was a concern as well as ability to fill multiple roles I would buy a 6.5 x 55 Swede and run circles around both the previous calibers.

My two cents.
Dave.

Not sure why people insist 308 is cheaper. Any half decent shells are the same price either way.

Sure there is surplus/wannabe surplus 308. Unfortunately my experiences show that most of the “cheap” ammunition tends to have garbage accuracy. Sometimes you get lucky but I wouldn’t expect much.

Claiming the 308 is better for target makes zero sense.

Any short action is inherently more accurate, laws of physics dictate this . How much more with such a slight difference is likely not even close to the effect the shooter himself has . He believes it’s more accurate, likely to shoot better

Between the two .308 Win or .270 Win, for a first rifle, I'd go with the .308 Win - that's what I did back in the day with my first ever centerfire rifle.

Both are similar and capable of taking any big game in NA. The real difference for me is 308 can be had in shorter rifles due to the short action and 16-20" barrel. I prefer compact rifles for hunting most often so for me the 308 would take first place. But solely on the fact it can still perform in a carbine size platform. I've never come across a carbine sized hunting rig chambered in 270

That's funny stuff, right there.

Why the amazement? The 270 gives up nothing whatsoever to the 308, 280 or 3006.

I would feel undergunned with any of those in grizzly country. Overkill = just right. 300 Win Mag with 200gr bullets felt small when I was stared down by a sow with cubs last week. 5km down a mountain and across a river to my truck means I stack the odds in my favour as much as I can. I feel like getting a BAR in 338 Win Mag. Light em up, son!

My deer rifle is a .270 and my BIL shoots a .308. We both took a deer last year. I can't be sure but I think mine was slightly deader than his. I vote .270.

First Gun Purchase coming up, looking for some support through experience. I personally have seen some awesome shots from the 308 but I am torn in two directions with conflicting advice. Any and all help would be awesome. What are your thoughts?

10 pages of more conflicting advice! As a new shooter myself I soon came to realize that there is no common accepted answer to the first centrefire rifle question. Some folks value bullet drop, some bc, some low recoil, some what they have always used, some cheap ammo, some versatility for different game, some short action, etc, etc... and some say who cares, dead is dead.

Personally, I do not have the experience to say which is best... but as a newbie I looked at the 6.5s as I wanted a capable deer rifle with low recoil.

At the end of the day I kinda don't see the point of that other than for fun or competition.

I think it's cool to see how others are pushing the limits of things, it's interesting and fun.

However, to me, every cartridge has a "range" it fits in. I think .308 is best in the 165 gr. range. Sure, you can go lighter or heavier but that seems to be where it wants to sit.

It's great seeing how far guys can get things to go though, but I like the middle of the road always works approach. If I wanna push a .30 harder, faster, longer, bigger I'd rather use a different .30 ya know ?
what about a long action 308 so with really heavy bullets.

cartridge length is not an issue

7mm-08. Basically equal to a 270 with hand loads and lighter recoil. Better ballistics then 308.

Not accurate in any of the claims there. .270 handily outperforms 7mm-08, and .308 actually outperforms 7mm-08 at all hunting ranges, albeit marginally, at matched bullet weights. The incremental BC advantage of the 7mm isn’t enough to overcome the .30’s greater expansion ratio / efficiency.

Glad to OP is discussing sensible and easy to feed options. If it was me, if I saw myself principally shooting targets I’d get the .308, principally hunting, the .270. Both are the same price to feed, similar recoil, the .270 is a bit easier to work with in the field and slightly more effective if you hunt out west.
