308 Winchester or 270?

One thing I've only seen mentioned rarely on here about .308 are rifle options.

Such a great variety of .308 rifles ranging from the super light compact Kimber Adirondack to the Stag-10 AR10 non-restricted. Awesome choices in .308 you just don't see such variety in off the shelf rifles in other cartridges.

Considering all the options we have, I’m actually surprised anyone goes out and buys a brand new 270 in 2018.

Ya the 270win is so clearly outdone by all the new options out there it's hard to imagine anyone using such an antiquated round

To the OP Have/had a few of both 308 and 270...both work as expected...have had more bang flops with 270 than any other

Custom, go custom! A person can pick and choose any component of weight, length and quality of aftermarket products. Also, there are many private gun makers to choose from, many!

Not trying to be cheeky but how can much better can a hunting rifle get than 'bang flop'? How do you outdo that?

Plus 308 is boring...270 now that's Jack O'Connor...say no more.....finding cover now!

Really, they are both boring... only because they are so common... they are so common because they are both pretty balanced cartridges suitable for a wide range of game and conditions.. so I guess boring isn't such a bad thing in this case.

You missed the sarcasm.

Boring or not, the last group I shot out of my 5lb.3oz 270 win went .250". Used the same reloads in my ruger#1 270 win and shot .500". The 270 win is an accurate cartridge and the velocity is 3100 fps using 130 gr ttsx. 110 gr ttsx at 3400 fps! I don't find it boring at all. :)

Dead is dead. Don't think the animal really cares what it's shot with as you do your part. 308 just never been my thing. Always liked the 270

I’ve owned, reloaded and hunted with 270’s and .308’s but have since moved on and now don’t own either. If I was buying one again it would be the .308 as it does everything the .270 does and a bit more as it can shoot heavier bullets. This threads full of misinformation. The die hard .270 guys have picked anemic .308 loads to compare with their .270 data. If I could post pictures off my phone I would just show manufactureres load data but from Barnes own data, with the most common weights, max velocities are;

110 grain
.270 - 3507 fps
.308 - 3539 fps

130 grain
.270 - 3173 fps
.308 - 3285 fps

140 grain
.270 - 3082 fps
.308 - 2994 fps

150 grain
.270 - 2900 fps
.308 - 2919 fps

165/168 grain
.270 - oh right you don’t have that card in your deck
.308 - 2877 fps

My personal load data matched these figures very closely depending if I had a 22 or 24” barrel. Apples to apples they’re so close it’s irrelevant which is a far cry from the 3-400 fps advantage the thread leads you to believe the .270 has. I’ve never been bored with “common, balanced, versatile cartridges that work” so I can’t comment on that disability. I’m a fan of 5lb rifles and .308’s are usually lighter then their full length cousins. There’s no wrong answer but the .308 isn’t as bad as the anti 30 cal fan club are making it sound.

What's the BC and SD of those "comparable" grains of bullets you post there....a bit of misinformation also
