32-40 win

I have four old levers in 32-40, my favorite cartridge. Can get lead from bullet bench (bullet barn) in Calgary. Pro-Line in Calgary has brass as well as P&D in Edmonton. Reloaded for it for years, good ol cartridge and shoots very well. Back in the day when people went to watch target shooting like they do golf today, the 32-40 was the top target cartridge more often than not.

We really should have a 32-40 club.....

Ye got that one right. I got my new 32-40 barrel today for a build I'm doing on a No.4 mk1 Lee Enfield action, and it's sweet. I'm doing 'er up as a switch barrel type. (Savage style with locking collar for easy headspace adjustment)

Down the road, I intend to get another barrel done in 25.35 Win. so I can have some .25 caliber giggles as well. Old school baby!

Once I get this build done and out shoosting, I'll do a range report on 'er. Can't wait.:D

Excellent idea!! I look forward to seeing your reports on it, that will be a neat mix of action and cartridge!

the .32-40 is not just a great target firearm. It's a good hunting round too. Many years ago there was an article in one of the major outdoor magazines (I think Outdoor Life) about a guy with a "Three Barrel Gun Company" drilling (12 ga SxS over a .32-40) who shot a huge black bear with one shot from the .32-40.

I just about finished up my new 32-40 "Squirrel Bomber" based on a No.4 mk.1 which was previously a Parker
Hale basic L.E. sporter from the 50's. I've got 'er to the range testing stage and will be doing that next week.
The barrel is a 24" McGowen supplied by Mystic Precision and was profiled, chambered & threaded to my specs
by Terry at Black Art Rifle Co. (Nice work & finish,by the way!):)

I machined up a locking collar for the barrel from C360 brass round bar and set the headspace at 2 thou for
initial trial. I also notched the breech end of the barrel for the extractor, which I thinned out for the narrower
than standard barrel notch I used. The scope is a Nikko Sterling 4X that is ideal for the terrain and critters
this puppy is gonna be used for. I'll be using 170 gr. RNFP cast boolits only in this beasty and not be exceedin'
20,000 psi with me loads either.

I like the feel and balance of the bugger, and even though it looks kinda plain, it turned out just as I envisioned
for this build. A fun and easy to use small game to deer-sized critter rifle that will do the job for me once I get
'er dialed in. Clay-bird sized objects will be in harms' way at 200 yds.

.32-40 is one of the best cartridges out there, my all-time favourite. I've had a Marlin lever, Enfield P14, and Savage 99 in it. My dream build is a super light single on a Ruger #1. I have an article from the Double Gun Journal by Ross Seyfried about an English gun built like this. He did a bunch of digging and found an old listing of a 'magnum' load from Kynoch. It ran a 180 grain boolit at 1850 fps! He made up this load with, if I remember correctly, 28 grains of Reloader 22. He used a hard cast boolit he dropped into ice water. He tested this load on his penetration box, and it penetrated four feet of wet and dry paper and catalogs, and he had to split the backing plank to recover the boolit! He himself was astonished. He then proceeded to kill several wild boar with it, one shot a piece, and even two with one shot! I personally used a cast, gas-checked 8mm boolit that weighs about 203 grains, and loaded it with 26 grains of Reloader 22, giving about 1700+ fps. Can't say enough about this cartridge.

In case anyone is interested, I saw a bunch of Winchester 32-40 brass at WSS in Prince George yesterday.

Never hurts to stock up, especially when it's the less common stuff. I'd ask you to grab that for me but I just bought some a few months ago.
