338-06

The 35 Whelen and 9.3x62 could both be concidered with the 338/06 as well if getting another bbl.

All three would be excellent choices.

But if a .30 cal Triple Shock and a .338 cal Triple Shock both exit, then the award goes to the .338, because it makes a bigger hole.
 
I built my Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06 Ackley Improved ..only to shoot 225gr bullets. I use the Accubonds and the TTSX's. LOVE IT!!

If I wanted a lighter bullet, I'd just use my Sako m75ss 300WM with my 180gr Accubond reloads.

I am thinking basing it off of a 200 gr bullet or very close to it. I figure more than enough bullet for good killing power if needed out to 400.

CYCBB486, not wanting to hijack your thread, but you say you're shooting 200 grs form a PH .30-06. Does the accuracy seem a little wanting? Could this be the reason you want to rebarrel, or say barrel life ending?


Most english made sporters chambered in NA calibers tend to have the slowest twists for the caliber. We over here, seem to like heavy for caliber bullets and our gun makers accomodate us.

I've seen BSA CF2 rifles in 300WM,
with only 1-14" twist, and they would group 10"s at 100yds with every round a keyhole, a big wake up call for the new gun owner trying to sight in with " new at the time", Federal 200gr BTSP's for Moose.

Let me know what the twist is in the old Parker Hale. My old PH 1200C, had a 1-14" in .308Win, and it was useless beyond 165 gr. 1-14 makes a nice 144-147gr, 762NATO ball ammo twist rate.

Again sorry to change the subject, .....the .338-06 sounds really ###y to me for years as well. I read an article back in the 70s on the wildcat, and always said it would be the first custom I ever built. It's got a ring to it almost as sweet as .270.:)
 
It really makes me think when I always hear stuff like "well a 30-06 with a 220 grain bullet has more SD than a 338 225 grain so it will out penetrate it."

Meanwhile guys are out in the field on a daily basis proving that x bullets, GMX's etc penetrate more than you could ask for regardless of weight and SD....bizarre.

Sorry man, not into sloppy seconds when it comes to rifles. New for me or something rebarelled. After shooting custom rifles for 5 years it is pretty hard to grab something off of the shelf and be happy with the accuracy out of it.
 
Well I found the perfect Rem 700 for the 338-06 or Improved project. Appears to be from Sept of 1973.........

I took a whitetail buck with my .338-06 last week.180 gr. Nosler Accubond propelled by IMR 4064.Double shoulder hits.Whoops.......hamburger.I think this thing is ok for whitetails and,I`m going to try them on a cow moose if I am fortunate enough to get within range of one before the season`s end.Thats the first animal I`ve taken with it, worked as well as the .30-06 180 Accubonds I`ve been using for years.

I`m using an older Remington Sportsman 78, factory barrel re chambered and bored to
.338
Accuracy is more than adequate for hunting, 1.5 inch groups at 100.
 
Glad I found this post, I have a Ruger Model 77 in 30-06 that I've been using for my
moose gun for 22 years - it's never failed me! After this years hunt I decided it's time for something new or different. I looked at new rifles but really don't want to put old faithful away. Therefore I decided to give him a face-lift, new stock (McMillan), tune-up the action, new trigger, new barrel, and new caliber - 338-06! I have some questions though, do I go with just a 338-06 or 338-06 AI - what are the advantages or disadvantages? Is the 338-06 A-Square just a 338-06 or is it something different to? Want to make sure I understand the differences and get the right one! Hpe you guys can help.

There is very little performance gain between the 338-06 and the improved version. Figure on ~50fps all else being equal. It all depends on if that is worth it to you. 338-06 dies are fairly common while the improved version somewhat less so. If your rifle fed from the magazine well as a 30-06 it should be just as good as a 338-06. Improved cartridges can occasionally have feeding issues due to the straighter body taper.

The 338-06 and the 338-06 A-Square are the same thing. A-Square "legitimized" the cartridge by taking it to SAAMI and having the performance standards set. As they were the ones doing so - on their nickle - they got to pick the official name.

rral22 - I'll know part of old faithful is with me (Action), it's just like when dad give me his old '72' Duster Slant "6", I put in a "340", stereo, new paint job and new mags all around; he still looked at it as his old slant "6".

Boo - Thanks for your input, I think I like the A-Square version!

What kind of barrel should I be looking at - Stainless Steel or Chrome Moly?
