.338 Federal...what do you think?

alot better bullet options for hunting in the 160 to 210gr in 338" than 358", thats the biggest difference I see

35 cal leaves you with 200gr interlocks, wooo hooo! :p the animals will make fun of you

YA, I never thought of it before, but there IS only 200gr Hornadys in 35cal. to choose from. I REALLY can't wait for another company to invent 35cal bullets. I bet Speer would make a dandy 250gr some day. A TSX would be a good invention as well.

Hmmmm ............. some day, maybe.

I have a Tikka T3 in .338 Federal . I have shot 2 deer with it , I really wanna bust an elk with it. I like this cartridge, its a keeper. The 2 whitetails I shot with it hit the ground and bounced and that was it. Just have to watch your range, max is 300 yards, no more. Having said that, my Tikka will put 3 Federal Premium 185 gr Barnes factory loads in side of an inch at 200yds without fail, everytime. I have not tried it at 300 yards yet but I will soon. I have no doubts that this cartridge will be around for a long time. Get one. You won't be disapointed.

Thanks Archie.
Im glad you mentioned that.
Im a big 358 fan and load for a bud's 338F. Its an interesting round for someone who is tired of peanut butter and yams, as my neice would say.
Let us know how it works when you slap an elk or moose with it.

The 338 Fed (a.k.a. 338-08) has been around for a long time. From my understanding from what I have been reading it's just the 308 case necked up with no other changes. It would be like comparing the 30-06 to the 308. If you like the idea of the 33 cal. in a short action there is nothing wrong with it. Should do anything the 308 will do with a bit more athority.
If and when my little 308 needs a new barrel you can bet I will think long and hard about the 338 Fed- 338-08

I've shot a moose and a couple of Bear with this round. The moose at 150 and both bear where inside of 50. I used the Accubond 180s and the hole in the off side of the moose was around 3" in diameter and the best thing was no trail to follow because the animals did not move.

That right there is the beauty of the .338F....30-06 velocities in a short action rifle. Less bulky ammo to carry, ect...

P.S.-....don't you guys mention anything about the 185 TTSX...Tod will gt his panties all in a bunch :p

338 fed

i read or heard somewhere that the recoil of the 338F wasa very similar to the .308 Is this correct? And is it my imagination or is the popularity of the .308W going down the drain? i have one and i like it but since i bought it i feel like it is not as well liked as it used to be. The magnums seem to taking over.

ahahhahaha

very similar, anybody who can handle a 308 or 270 or 30-06 could handle the recoil of a 338F. Its at the upper limit of what the average joe can handle comfortably, despite what they may say. ;)

I have a T3 in 338 Federal and i love it. I took a moose with it using 185 triple shocks last year, and it never took another step.

Velocities are around 2800 fps and I have gotten it to group 5 rounds in a half inch at 120 meters.

I can hardly wait till the 15th so I can go out and try for a moose with my t3 338 fed. I have it loaded with 215 SGK with RL15. Hopfully I get a chance to tip a big critter over with it. It's shot paper and no critters yet so I'm pretty pumped to see what it might do.:sniper:
