338 Federal!

just got back from trying some test loads in my Sako with the 215 grain Sierra GameKing. With H4895 I got up to 2645 fps. I will load some more up and test for groups next time. Also tried some 185 TSX @ 2700 fps over 46.5 grs H4895, shot around 1.5" 5 shot @ 100y.

Shooting prone out the back of my truck in some gravel pit..gun range is still closed

The range is closed because you wounded Roseanne's ass with those clunky 338Fudd boolits..........finally managed to hit her eh??

I have decided to buy a VXI 2-7x33 wide duplex for this rifle

That is a great choice for a glass for your .338 Federal - Sako.

Well I just finished up 25 cartridges. .308 brass necked up, CCI primers and IMR 3031 powder, 5 shots each going up 1 grain at a time. One of these years I'll get out to the range and give it a rip

I used the 185 TSX's when I was playing around with the 338/08... That combo took two black bears that spring and I was very impressed with the 338/08... Being a dumb ass I sold it and I have regretted it ever since...

I figure hunters have been killing moose for many years before the advent of barnes bullets. But in the end, I guess there's only one way to find out.

Here's somthing I'm working on for mine this weekend.

H4895 with 215 gr Sierra GameKings, then I switch to 210 TSX to find the hunting load

I worked up both loads, I think it'll be a good combo

215 grain Sierra BTSP, 47.0 grains H4895, WLR primer - 2610 fps avg and accuracy should be around 1" or less. Some groups were bigger but a couple were under 3/4" most likely rusty shooter error

210 grain Barnes TSX, 47.0 grains H4895, WLr primer - 2625 fps avg, accuracy around 1.25" group (only fired two groups) - should work awesome on big game inside 300y

Mild compared to what? Comparable to the .280?

Them's some good numbers for a smallish case. You gonna try to stuff a 225gr TSX in there? Barnes Data for it is around 2400fps, maybe to slow for you.

I wish someone would hammer a big moose or bear with one and give a good field report. I'm wondering if there is enough of an advantage over a .308 to get one.

recoil is very comparable to a 280/30-06 in a similar weight rifle. I wont bother going heavier than the 210/215 grainers, except I am still waiting for a box of 250 grain Hornady round nose to try

When I do kill something with this rifle I will let you know how it went. I gotta get time to go hunting first

finally got a box to play with and I think it will be very interesting

this OAL will fit in my mag, and cycle like greased lightning

Im gonna stuff some H4895 under them and see what happens...stay tuned

I don't get the 338 Federal or the 338 RCM, but any excuse to own a Sako 85 is still a good one.
