338 Federal

I tune my loads with the Speers and then shoot a group with the Partitions to confirm POI before hunting... all my hunting with the .350 Rem Mag and .35 Whelen is with the Partitions.
I only shot one moose with those 250s. It was coming out of a deep ditch on a woods road. Got up to the road and I shot it in the neck and cart wheeled it back down into the ditch. Dumb move. Had a hard time getting it back out of that hole.

Yup... should have waited until it hit the metaphorical "yellow line."

My brother shot a moose with his 270 once, that took off down a creek and ended up dead on a beaver dam a few miles down stream. After that I paid a lot more attention to where the game would end up. That was a lot of work getting that thing back to where we could load it. - dan

Yup, lots of moose get shot out in swamps and when they go down, the shooter looks around and goes... "Uh, oh..." and his buddies go... "You dumb-azz!"

I touch wood 🪵, every moose I shot died within feet from the canoe 🛶, the furthest I had to carry quarters has been maybe 40 feet!
I’ve only been moose hunting once… shot the moose with a 30-06, and it never went 10 feet. When it fell down, it was about 10 feet from an atv road. Pulled up along side, winched it onto a trailer and away we went. Couldn’t have planned it any easier 😂

with a 338 Federal ? :pRJ
My first moose was shot with a 7mm Wby, LH. From the wing of a Beaver float plane. Just came across that case tucked carefully away by 13 year old me when I was cleaning out some cupboards. Been a 7mm fan ever since. My next one was my old surplus 303, (we used to go moose hunting every fall). Then a 30-30 Win 94. Then a 788 in 7mm-08 for a couple years. And on and on. I miss those days. - dan

Took my newly rebarreled gun out and fired off 30 or so rounds just to get the scope dialed in and burn off some ancient powder. First impressions were good. Recoil was not as bad as I thought it would be. Gun shot decent groups with the old powder. Just had an issue with extraction. Need to address that before furthering the load development. This will be my moose and deer gun this fall.

Best 338 Federal group I shot so far. After going back out 2 weeks later with the same 47.0 grain load I couldn't get under a .7 inch group. Temperature was around 0 both days.

Gun is a Tikka T3 with McMillan Hunter stock. That will be the load for moose this fall, Priority 6 in AB.
