338 Federal

I fully realize that I'm being a bummer in this thread, but the fact remains that a 308 will do anything a 338Federal will do and conversely, a 30-06 will do anything a 338/06 will. If it was otherwise, they both might be more popular outside the ranks of a few old gun cranks looking for something a bit different.

Flame away! :)

270's can kill like a 30-06 too

It's true. Really, you could do away with all cartridges and just make do with a .30-06...or .308 Winchester....or a 7x57 or 6.5x55.....or pick some other one you like. It has always been thus. The new Sig Fury also won't do anything different then a .308, but even the military can't help itself.

And so, a .338 Federal is an itch that some have happily scratched.

OK, I have to bite on this one...
Neither the 308 or 30-06 can produce a .338" entry hole...on paper, or in hide! ;)

Here's what your extra 0.030" looks like. I very much doubt that small increase would make any noticeable difference for the 308 or 30-06.

I'd be more inclined to think that a significant increase in weight would be a better marker. Something like a 250gr 35cal to start.

Great timing for this! I've got a Rem 600 at the smith right now getting a 21" Douglas 338 Fed barrel installed, Timney trigger, aluminum trigger guard and custom Claro walnut stock. Hoping to be a light weight handy moose gun.

I've also acquired a factor 700 barrel that JES has board out to 338 fed (not for sale) for a future project.

243-257 =-14 thou
257-264=-7 thou
264-284=-20 thou
284-308=-24 thou
308-338=-30 thou

Sectional Density is higher with smaller Bullet diameter . Meaning a bullet will have carry more momentum and penetrate deeper all else being equal .

Makes really no difference ! Good Quality bullet and PROPER bullet placement the animal will be down . JMO RJ

Same difference between 270 and 30-06. And lots of folks will argue the 30's are superior due to that. So it goes. - dan
