338 Federal

H4895 was my standby, 47 grs with 210gr TSX or 215gr Sierra BTSP (2625-2640 fps) in the Sako 85 @ 2.9" OAL

my Ruger is a bit shorter, so I cant seat out. Loading 185gr TTSX I've run into compression issues with the bullet not being able to seat and stay there.....loaded some up with Benchmark too which doesnt have any compression issues with the 185gr TTSX. Yet to shoot any of them. Also will try the new IMR 8208xbr

Thinking of switching my order from the GMX to the Barnes. Hornady claims you need 2000 fps for proper expansion where I've read the Barnes need 1600-1800

From what I've read, the GMX is longer than the TSX, which will affect OAL as well...

Really wish Winchester would chamber the Featherweight in .338 Fed. Seems like they would go together like PB&J.

I'd like to see a M70 in the Extreme Weather...

there comes a point where the increase in velocity doesn't justify the increase in powder consumption- that happens when you go from 338 win mag to 340 weatherby

Says who? Your logic doesn't justify....anything really?.
A 338-06 can move a 225gr Partition at 2650fps and a 338 WM does 50fps faster with the 250gr. When comparing SD and trajectory, and the 3-4" of extra penetration (when your already getting around 30"), then the extra 10-15gr of consumption for that itty bitty gain is superfluous and any argument against it would float like a cheese grater.
So I would say his .338 Fed is very efficient, and well suited to his intention. Moving up to a .338 WM would really only be a security blanket; this reflecting a hypocritical "nanny state" mentality only re-enforced by an insecure insinuation that anything less than a 250gr Full House load is "pussy".
And Swift still makes a 275gr A-Frame for the .338. But the real "mans" load was the old 300gr Power Point that truly enamored the Alaskan Brown Bear guides with the cartridge.

338 federal - John Barsnes article

I read an article about the 338Fed vs 358 by John Barsnes not too long ago. While very similar cartridges, he thought the .338 would come out on top for a few reasons, I'll have to re read it.

Hey gatehouse - you have a link to this article you mentioned? I can't seem to find it on the net..

Thanks

Although you didn't state your prference for any one type or weight of new rifle, and I'm assuming you handload from reading the site, I was wondering if you ever considered a 9.3X62. I have one in a CZ FS and I love it. It is extremely effective on game out to 300 mtrs and farther, some great bullets out there for it, Barnes Speer Nosler and bulk Privi ( Ithink) so you can shoot it more, for less. Easy to buy brass for or if you look on reloading site Ted tells how to make it from '06 brass which is what I did initially for my first 50 cases. You can load this down to .338 fed / .358 win levels but you can also come very close to 338 WM if you like. Bullets available frrom 250-325 gn.
Just a thought. Good pics of a big grizzly taken with 9.3X62 over on Hunting site.
