338 Lapua Magnum at 2 miles (3561 yards)

There is a long range hunting forum. Google them and do some reading.

Then decide if you want to spend that much time and money on practice for it.

Thank you for that advice, I will definitely check it out.

The reason why I asked the question is because I am having a custom built rifle made for me in the near future and I am in the process of selecting the appropriate barrel and caliber. Cheers.

As far as long range hunting goes, I knew a chap who killed a caribou cleanly with one shot from a .338LM/300SMK at 900y. It was a deliberate shot, prone with a rest in an area where he routinely practiced. He knew the exact range. The 300SMK acted like a varmint bullet, and the forend of the caribou was ruined. He wasn't hunting - the caribou presented itself.
A friend killed a deer at 730m with one shot from a 7mmWSM. He had zeroed the rifle at exactly that distance, and had practiced. Took the shot from a rest in a blind. When a decent buck appeared he took the shot. He had spent quite a bit of time waiting.
