338 Lapua Magnum at 2 miles (3561 yards)

Forget about AB... Think Beattle Kill.... Logging has cleared massive hunks of real estate through central BC and the OK valley. Forget about yards... think miles.

I took a drive last fall to see what was logged around me... couldn't recognise alot of the country I used to hunt in. Not sure if Google Earth will show the patches but it is stunning.

At these type of distances, I would just set up wireless cameras and use a TV screen to view the shooting. I think any type of optical spotter is going to be challenged to see precisely in mirage at those types of distances. I am sure with enough money, optics or better.. telescopes can be used.

2350 yds (GPS ranged) was far enough for me...

The issue with using a telescope is the bigger the aperture the worse the mirage. I have an 8" SCT telescope, with mirage and unsteady air it is like looking into a swimming pool for terrestrial viewing.

To do this type of shooting, the real problem is elevation in your scope. Here a mechanical scope base is a necessity. Designed one years ago when I was into extreme range shooting. Works out to around 225mins of elevation - then the scope takes over.

So getting upwards of 300mins of up is easy to find these days.

There are now a few other of similar design... the goals are identical and there only so many ways to engineer the solution so they all look/work similarly.

The actual limitation.... is the BARREL. When the optic is tilted enough, the target view is obscured by the barrel. Why you will see some that have the scope elevated a huge amount... Allows for the tilt and to see over the barrel. Super tall combs are the norm too.

Essentially, the scope becomes a volley sight... and the smart engineers put them on the side of the "devices".

Sorry if this seems a bit trite but extreme range shooting became more an optics stunt then actual aimed fire. At some distance, EVERY bullet is simply lobbed at the target and it becomes "directed fire"... not really aimed fire. So as Swissin indicated, given enough ammo, you will hit any target at pretty much any distance.

Find a bullet that will make the transition to subsonic flight accurately and you are only limited by the "up" in your system

The most fun I had was pushing a 223 and 80gr Amax to 1 mile. When all the moons align, you can indeed hit sub MOA with such a small set up. But in any wind, becomes really tough.

A 338LM and a 300gr bullet massively extends this range. I know that 1 mile is really not big a deal with the 338LM. 2miles, yes, that would be challenging for sure but not crazy hard to do.

There is/was a club in the US that shot 308's to 2000m. They made the target on the desert floor and lobbed the bullets in like lawn darts... That would be interesting.

Its not like you're only using your brass once, time is spent loading any caliber, and sourcing is clicking a mouse. That's still free.

I like to shoot a big .338, and find it cheaper than many of my "ordinary" hunting cartridges. The big target bullets compare favorably to premium hunting bullets in price. Depending on what and where you get them and what quantities you buy in they're practically cheap. Easier on barrels than some of my powder gobbling small bores too.

Can you tell me where you can find 338 caliber 300gr bullets for .80 cents a bullet? I can only find SMK for $57 per 50 + tax & shipping. Scenar are $86 per 100 + tax & shipping. Berger are $260 per 250 + tax, won't count shipping on that one as there is a store local.

As the saying goes...throw enough lead at anything and you'll hit it eventually!

Go ahead and try that and see how it works out for you. Having some experience with extreme long range shooting I can say that you would shoot yourself broke before getting a "statistical" hit. There is so much atmosphere between the gun and the target that jist chucking bullets into the area is a fools errand.

I have tried it...many times...at the government's expense. 2500m is the furthest so far.
