338LM for a coyote?

The OP says he is using a 338 because the smaller calibers like the 204 are marginal at 150 yds. The good thing about the western provinces is we can use whatever caliber we chose so if he wants to blow them up with a large caliber all the power to him but I still think it's a waste.

lol your either new to the Internet or sarcasm.

Why would you want to waste a $150 coyote hide by blowing it up with a big rifle. At this time of the year when they are not prime shoot them with what ever you like but when they are prime a whole different story. You obviously have not shot alot of coyotes with a 204 if you think 150yds is pushing the limits.

Where do you get $150 for the hide? In either case just drag them to the treeline and leave them.
I never said a 204 is pushing the limits at 150 either. I just said a shoulder hit at 150 with a 204 will leave you with a coyote running away to who knows where. The bullets for the most part just splash on the bone.

I said use the 338 for the 400+ shots, not 150.
Although I wouldn't shot myself from shooting one at any distance.

I've shot a couple of coyotes with my .338 using 250 SMK's. At close range (~200y), there is so much energy that the bullet does nothing in the way of expansion... Headshots on the other hand...

I developed a load with 250gr Accubonds for hunting applications... Looking forward to seeing what these'll do.

Headshots are red mist or what?
The accubonds open up pretty fast?

Using a .338 Lapua is ridiculous for Coyote. Someone has to say it.

Use a .308, .270, or 7mm if you really want to reach out. But anything bigger than that is overkill. Would you hunt a Wolf with a .50 BMG?

How do you kill something deader then dead?

I think coyote hunting with a .338 would be an excellent way to practice and get field time.

More exciting than a static target.

As for the complaints about cost, this one really blows me away.Folks that say something is too expensive to shoot game with haven't really sat down and did the Ukrainian math. How many coyotes does one shoot in a season, how many deer? how many moose or elk?

Let's say If I shot two deer even with a .338 with store bought ammo @ $120.00 per 20, that is $12.00 whole dollars on the extreme high end. That is not even your food for the day. ;)

i think any bullet you find will just go right through like a fmj. a yote is a pretty soft target, the material, weight and speed of a 338lm is just gonna blow right through. only way i can see it not is if you had a flat nosed bullet. then of course it wont fly the best. but it would likely knock the yote ass over teakettle when it hit the thing.

This, plus I'd rather spend the money on actual non paper targets any day.

If you do it take a picture... You know, for science ;)

A buddy and I shot some meat with a 338 at 200 and it just zipped right threw.

Doesn't someone make a .338/160gr bullet? Out of a LM they should be moving like a .220 Swift.........Harold

I hunt them with my 223 and give them to a buddy of mine that skins and sells them, but in the off season I always wanted to hit one with my 338 win mag in the name of science. As far as I'm concerned discharging any firearm with a coyote in the sights is never a waste.

Yes!......Yes!..............Keep talking. I like where you're going with this!

LMAO!! I agree 100%

I took a deer in the front shoulder with my 338 RUM from 190 yards, 210 grain nosler partition. It dropped lol, didnt move from the spot I shot it at... What really surprised me was the fact there was hardly any meat damage, I've seen a lot more meat damage from guys hunting with a 308 or 30-30. Lol anyways I to second the fact that blasting a yote with a large cannon is a great idea! Thats just my $0.02
