338wm or 35 whelen , why?

Since you mentioned it..... Anyone seen any Trophy Bonded Bear Claw Whelen ammo in stock anywhere?

I wanna buy a few more boxes :)

not sure about bonded claws or declawed but i think there is one box in Whitehorse at the only mainly gunstore ... if the bullet and brass are nickeled that is the one i ve seen ... with a red box federal.

Yup, that's them. Thanks for the heads up.

Have forsaken the heavyweight '.375 holycow & holycow' chambered BRNO 602, ... for this here whisper-featherweight 9.3/62 Husqvarna. QRW mounts holding a 1.5x6 B&L over irons.
Have big hopes these 250 grain mono's will do it all out to 400 ...

I have used both on moose .. the whelen is a good gun but the 338 will do everything better for sure .. people say past 300 yards . I say carry something that it does not matter if you are 50 or 300 .. the 338 will get the job done .. the whelen will do the job most of the time for sure ,, But I would hate too see something that is out there a bit .. And look down and say .. I should have brought the 338 .. The 338 should be with you all the time and not have too worry

Yup, With that extra 8" drop and 250ft/sec slower at 500yds ya best just stick to raccoons with the Whelen ;)

I can't even tell ya how many times I've been in that situation with my .303 british LOL so I went and got myself a .338WM LOL

Haha good discussions fellas.

I do own the Ruger hawkeye , 35 Whelen and I roll my own.

Ive had the Whelen for a fair while now and shot 2 boxes of 250gr Corelokt factories for the Brass and began reloading as a Newbie.

I used this Rifle to stalk sambar deer over a Dog (pointer) for 3 years , shots were seldom over 100m and generally on the burst, point and shoot.

I used Woodleigh 225gr RN SP , great bullet for -200m and i was very succesful with one shot kills.
The Pooch Passed and hunting changed direction for me as a deer hunter, I began stalking and finding unalert deer.

Im rambling a little, but since those days Ive shot Australian Buffalo and a variety of Smaller game with 250gr Hornady interlocks and use the rifle as a 250m MAX round myself, as the 308 & 270 are taking care out at the 300-400m bracket.

Have loaded 200gr TSX and pumped a few of those into Buff and Pig but never a Sambar. Too much of a fan of the bigger slower cup n cores.

cheers
WL

I just picked up a winchester 70 sporter in 338 winmag and shot it the other day. I must say that I was a little bit apprehensive of the recoil but I was very surprised and pleased. I can't wait to get out and shoot this some more and start loading for it. Maybe next will be a 35 Whelen.

I have a Winchester 70 in 338 win and a Husqvarna 98 in 9.3x62, my intention is to use the Husqvarna when I am calling Moose in thick country where long shots are unlikely, it is setup with a 1-4 Nikon and Kwik Site see through mounts, the Winchester has a 6500 2.5-16 so intended more for cut blocks and open country. I have never hunted with the 9.3x62 but I have enjoyed shooting it. Would own a Whelen but I think the 9.3x62 is close enough. If I could only have one of the three it would be the 338.

I don't shoot farther than 300 yards at game. So for me, the .35 Whelen is in every way better than the .338 win mag. I'm not getting rid of my custom Sako AV classic any time soon.

In what way is it better? I can see situations where it is just as good, others where it doesn't matter, but none where it's better.

Yeah, guess I should've known that at some point, every thread will start discussing bear defense and/or why the 9.3 is better than any other caliber. :)

And speaking of bear defence LOL I believe the 338 is very popular in the north for bear .. I never seen anyone with a whelen .. But did see some 338 for sure.. So I would think the 338 is better
