340 Weatherby ?

Anybody have experience with Weatherby's 340 magnum. Just looking for opinions good or bad. Thanks
I have a Sako 75 in .340 Weatherby that I use for Moose hunting. Think of it as a .338 WinMag on steroids. Flat trajectory and high energy rounds are usually one shot drop kills at 300 yards +.
Cabelas usually has the 225 grain Swift A-Frame Weatherby ammo on sale for about $70/box every summer.

You might want to consider a scope with extended eye relief, you will know it when you pull the trigger. Good luck.

Shot one and it felt the same recoil wise to my 375H&H in a Weatherby. The gun may have been a few ounces lighter but it felt and shot like the same gun. Very nice in both chamberings.

I been waiting for someone to say something negative, and then pounce...............nothing negative being said.
The 340 Wby is in my opinion the finest all around hunting cartridge in the world. If I ever HAD TO chose one cartridge only to hunt with and could have no others, I believe it would have to be the 340. This cartridge is capable of taking antelope at 400+ mtrs easily and loaded with 300 gn solids fully capable on elephant and Cape buff. Handloaded to full potential it is significantly better than the 338 WM, but then again most hunters would never take advantage of the extreme long range capabilities of the 340 Wtby.

Sorry for the delay I been incommunicado for the past 6 days, will try and catch up today.

I make all my brass using 375 H&H for my 340s, used to be W-W but all I can find these days is R-P, still works just fine and sells for roughly a buck a brass. Same cost as any other belted mag cartridge.

The .338 WM is just as good. In fact, if it can't be done with the .338 WM, then it says more about the person behind the trigger than anything else....:)

The rifle that I reach for 90% of the time, is my .338WM. The .340Weatherby is just a 'jacked up' .338WM, which in my books makes it a good cartridge.

But, I'd just buy a .338WM... oh wait, I did...

I wanted to get a stainless 340 WBY but alas they don't make them anymore so I ended up getting a 338 Win Mag in a Tikka T3 Lite SS... 2900fps with a 225gr Interbond and R19. Within 100fps of the big WBY. Not bad for the little 338. I don't think the elk and moose will notice :D

I've been wondering if a rechamber would be possible on my Sako 85 338WM...
Mostly for the novelty (or boredom) of it, I'm just not sure if the shorter barrel (it is braked) would burn the extra powder.

Sorry but not only is it not within 100 fps of the 340, it's not even within 200 fps of my 250 gn load and is more than 300 fps from my 225 gn load............now that IS a significant difference. And before anyone calls this into question I use an Oehler 35P chronograph, 2 in fact and yes I get to load my brass more than once!!!!!!!!!!

1899...............when did you take up trolling.......LOL.

Totally agree! I have rifles in both chamberings and there is an honest 200+ fps between the two. Anyone saying otherwise probably hasn't loaded for .340Wby. In fact I can say that all the Weatherby chamberings I own (6) have been true to the velocities quoted by Weatherby when shot in Weatherby rifles.

But it's a well known fact that you load cases with a shovel!

A .338-06 with a 22 inch barrel, a .338 Win Mag with a 24 inch barrel and a .340 Wby with a 26 inch barrel are all excellent performers with quality bullets ... but with maximum safe loads there are big velocity differences between each due to case capacity and bore length.

I thought he just pours powder into a bucket and then dips the case in, which naturally fills it to the brim.... :p

See now that is just a bad rumor............you can't get near enough powder in a case that way. I have made myself a special set of ramrods for every caliber I load for...................I fill the case, then I fill up the powder funnel on top and jam a whole bunch more in with my specially built ramrods.....................JEEEZZZEEE.......armatures!!!

I recall Seyfried used to be a big proponent of the 340, but eventually soured on it as he felt it should be capable of more, eventually calling it "sluggish"

If I was in the market for a large cased .338 I'd likely go Lapua. Or maybe 338 RUM, which is the only RUM cartridge that really made any sense to begin with.
