35 whelen project ideas and help(now 9.3x62mm)

Just so you guys know you are evil horrible people i have literally spent 3 days watching video's and reading everything i can find on the 9.3x62mm i have become a true cult member already

Welcome to the club, Brian.

I have hunted using a lot of different medium bore rifles over the past fifty years. Got my first real one, a 358 Norma Mag in 1969, and it is a wonderful cartridge. Have put a lot of meat in the freezer with the 375 H&H. A couple of 358 Wins and 9.3X57s, and a 375-06 have also done well. They are all good for really big game.

However, once I started hunting with the '62, I never looked back. Am fond of saying that having a 9.3X62 is like a 375 with five in the magazine.

Look forward to hearing from you after you have used yours a bit. And, again after the first few 325 gr loads at 2400 fps. ;)

Ted

PS: If your 'smith has not located a barrel, Tradex still has some in stock. https://www.tradeexcanada.com/content/mauser-m98-barrel-zastava-93x62

The chamber reinforce is plenty long enough to remove the 98 Mauser threads, and recut for your rifle.

I havent heard back from him yet but i believe he is trying to find one that will work with my current barrel inlet in my stock he got me to measure my current barrel to determine what contour it is so he can find one that is close so i dont have to open up the barrel channel and have to refinish the stock but ill let you guys know as soon as i hear something

I finally Recovered a Geco 255GR SP, they are really exposed Tip, not sure if Bonded or not but on a Sambr hind at 40m I caught in the opposite side shoulder, looks bonded??? turned out great I will post a photo shortly!

the 9.3 is pretty groovey! I'm starting to like mine!

He should be able to turn the barrel down. Would be a shame to put a big thick barrel on such a svelte rifle.

soft foam in the magazine can help ...

what is the col of your partizan?

Soft foam? Not sure off hand about the COL, Im just using factory loaded ammo so I didn't think it could be an issue, it doesn't seem like there is anywhere I could modify along the feed path if I recall, if I remember right the lead tip of the factory rounds were snagging on the edge of the chambering cut into the barrel.

I'm content with factory ammo, but would like to run 250-270 grain rounds, biggest game I hunt is elk, and the 286 works well for that but I like something that shoots a little straighter out to say 350 yards if needed.

Yeah i really dont want to screw up the handling of this kimber id actually like to improve them by chopping off 4 inches of barrel and then taking off the 4.5-14 leupold and replacing it with a fx2 4x33mm with cds dial or possibly a 1-6x24mm of some sort not sire what yet

Brian, a fixed 3X or 4X scope is plenty for any ranges you will be using your 9.3X62. Aiming at a target at 300 yards using a 3X scope is easier than doing the same with open sights at 100, and if you can't shoot well enough to hit at 100 with the irons, you shouldn't be shooting at 300 with any power scope.

You will be pleasantly surprised when you start using your new rifle with an FX2 4X33.

Current FX-II Ultralight 2.5x20mm. Discontinued M8 Compact 4x28mm.

There's a current FX-I Rimfire 4x28mm. I got the reticle changed and parallax set for 100 yards.

I wish leupold made a 3x24mm or 4x24mm fxII

They do make a 3X20, straight one inch tube, very similar to the one on the rifle that I posted the picture of earlier in this thread.

It is available on special order from the Leupold Custom Shop. Checked a few days ago for someone else on here. The reply from Leupold:

Ted,

Base cost on the Bigbore 3x scope is 399.99 plus any applicable taxes. Cost will change with different reticle or adjustment add ons. Turn time currently is running 6-8 weeks.

Regards,

Josh

Thanks Ted thats excellent I plan on ordering thru the custom shop anyway due to wanting cds dial for what ever load i settle on that will be IMHO the perfect setup for this rifle

Hey, nice rifle! Looks a bit like mine, except for the longer barrel.

Have you decided on the barrel length for sure yet? The one in my picture is 21 inches, and it swings and points like an extension of your arm.

Ouch! Some truth there ........ We were joking around the table after my last trip there. I told Hannah that if we moved to the Yukon, they'd give her a free pony. She wasn't buyin' it. Alex has said that she regrets not looking into that position in the ER at your hospital.

The Yukon is a fine place to live providing you are healthy.
If you have cancer it is a long and frequent trip to Vancouver...
