35 Whelen twist rate

Sure love my Rem 7600 factory carbine 35 whelen!
The 1:16 twist doesn't bother me abit lol. shoots factory federal premium 225gr TBBC into basically one hole groups.

P.S.
No it's not for sale lols

It's hard not to like the Whelen regardless of rifle.
I've bought, traded and parted with dozens of rifles but never once considered letting my Whelen go.

I have shot a lot of game with my old Rem 700 classic .35 W 1:16" twist and 250 grain speers and hornady and some various 225 grain bullets. It shot accurately despite many other functional flaws.
I used a custom barrel Ruger #1 in 1:14 that handled heavy bullets well, but did't like 200's - no hardship for me, I wouldn't use 200 grain bullets for the x/large game the Whelen is intended for anyway.
I now shoot a custom Sako AV with a 1:12 twist and use it exclusively with 250's. I shoots them very well.
I wouldn't use a new Remington if they were giving them away. I have had way too many frustrations with Remingtons lack of quality control to ever buy another. And putting a fluted barrel on a rifle that kicks as much as a Whelen with stiff loads? - no thanks! I need the weight to absorb recoil.

My only choice for bullet was the 275 gr. Hornady for many years and it served me well.
I know the load was slow but for my hunting it really worked with the little bit of load development I had done.
Then when my 275 gr. bullet supply started to dwindle I worked with either a Speer or Hornady bullet of 250 gr. And was rewarded with better accuracy and of course more speed.
Currently, it's either a 225 or 250 gr. load usually with the 225 getting the nod..

I bought one of the SF Remington's.Only shot 225 acubonds so far.My last one sure likes the 225 Bear claws.of course they are hard to find.
Feel good, recoil is less then expected. It is lighter then the 22-250 SF,must be the big hole in the barrel.

Al Simmons gun shop in Hamilton, ON has a stack of federal premium 225 TBBC. I think they'll mail order.

Some say it's not to much more than the 30-06 for recoil! And now its a shoulder killer, which is it?
Maybe more if your recoil sensitive ?

It doesn't have a the sharp snap that the magnums do. For the 225gr loads the best comparison I can think of is like a hot loaded 444 Marlin, Just a heavy shove. However the fast 250-275gr loads have a real solid shove ;)

Well within the tolerable range. The Whelen is so easy to load for, and really easy to like.

Trust me, when those crosshairs are full of Bull Moose the last thing you will remember is recoil.
My Whelen had a hard plastic butt plate from 1964 to 2005 when I screwed up my shoulder .

It will be fine! I have shot 375 H&H a fair amount, and lots of hot 444 marlin loads.

My favorite medium bore scope is the VX3 1.75-6x32.

Currently mine is wearing the 1.5-5, My previous Whelens have had the 2-7 and 3.5-10.

So far I like the 1.5-5 the best, but I also like it for the #4 reticle.
