350 Legend

Asking if you should buy a new gun is like asking if you should buy socks .

This is true lol.
Kinda missed op question about ammo in Ottawa, I live here too, but don't shoot factory anything except rimfire and shot gun.
You got SAIL/CABELLA/SPORTS ACTION, and that's about it for shops.
But lots of places that sell ammo and ship in Canada so you won't be stuck, just might have to buy a few hundred $$ worth at a time to make.the shipping even out. Not sure it's common enough to just grab a box here and there.

Just shy of a 35 Rem. Not many people call those "meh" if that's the need you gotta fill.

Some very good bullets available. Efficient. Cheap (relatively) these days.

Bet it doesnt matter for most hunting that it's a straight wall.

I love 300 Blk but kinda feel like the Legend opens big game avenues the lil Blackout doesn't. The 110gr Barnes Tac-tx and Hornady CX, and 120Gr Tac-tx are awesome though. The 135 hr Hdy flex tip looks promising!

Kinda hankering for the 300 ham'r here but if you need ammo available in stores not so much lol

To all the "Mehs" out there. We've used 350L for 3 seasons now.
6 big bucks, 5 black bears, and all were one shot kills.
Hits like a 35 Remington, recoils less than 243.
It is the cheapest most verstaile round for deer I've seen in 40 years.
I have a Ruger Ranch and my buddies have a variety of Savage, Howa, etc.
I wouldn't hesitate buying another one if I needed it.
It's the go-to rifle for us UNDER 200YDS!!! Very important,.
Our woodlots don't have a shot longer than 175yds so it's perfect.
FMJ are 20 bucks a box
180gr Super X are 30 bucks a box or cheaper on sale.
Aresenalforce is the place to go to for ammo.
Delivered to your door by the vendor you choose.
Don't use the 150gr Deer Seasons. They don't have good enough passthrough.
Stick to 170gr and up.

Mogulrider,

What would you say about moose 150 yards and in?

From your descriptions of big penetration and bleeding on good size bears, with the right bullet it sounds up to the job?

Wouldn't hesitate except with certain conditions. Yardage being key
My brother took one with his 2 years ago at 125yds. One in the engine room, one in the shoulder to immobilize.
Down he went. We do two shot sequence on moose anyway regardless of cartridge. Had full passthrough on engine room shot.
1000lb Bull. He stepped out when my brother was whitetail hunting with a friend. His buddy had a 308 if required. But it wasn't necessary.
I would not go beyond 150yds.

Right on.

I've never only shot em one time with a 30-06 anyway, like you said.

Our Dad was religious about the 2 shot sequence. We stick to it as it works and it's ethical.
Besides chasing a engine room moose can be a pain as you may know.
Those animals can run...
BTW my avatar is 250lb buck taken with my 350L last month.
200 dressed. 140yds.. Dropped like a rock. Full passthrough.

It absolutely does beat the heck out of having to chase them!

Nice buck there! Thats a big boy alright.

BTW - if you were thinking moose. I personaly would wait for the 400 Legend. It's a 300 yd caliber.
Nechako apprarently is bring in the the New Gen 2 Ruger Ranches in 400 Legend.
That would be the be ticket

We have had issues with passthrough with 350 Legend 150gr Deer Season. They don't leave a good blood trail.
180gr is what we use. Hits like a bloody truck
Teh 150gr is designed to dump energy immediately and yes it works but there hasb't been any passthrough in two bucks we hit.
Yeah they only ran 50 yds but in thick crap it took over an hour to find them
180gr leaves a gusher wound...
Real world feedback

If its liek any 350 legend rifle it'll lvoe anything.
I can shoot 5 different brands and weights with my ranch and so can my buddies.
That Weatherby (probably Howa) will be a great rifle for you.
Get a short barrel one. You don't need a long barrel for this round.
For fun we have 10 shot range competitions with our rifles
We can all stack 10 rounds under 1.5 MOA with 4 different rifles.

400 Legend does look pretty solid!

Where past 150 yards is an issue I'll probably have the 6.5 CM out. But if the 400 is that much more capable thats interesting.

They are just starting to get the youtube guys out testing it. Man its a thumper.
After all the kills we've had with 350L we noticed something when dressing the deer.
There was very little lead in the cavity. Even though the 180gr is a cup and core it is staying together.
The exit holes were 3/4' or larger. If that 400 does the same which one can assume it'll easily take class 1 animals at distance.
I'm recoil sensitive due shoulder injury so it'll fit inside my max recoil tolerance.

I don't have distance issues on my land so 350l works perfectly for the game I hunt.
400L opens up the range possibilities. What few folks understand though is in real world conditions we've dropped monster deer where they stand. 6 big heavy bucks literally fell over on the spot. I've got 62 deer now inmy life and this is a rare thing.
Typical centerfire doesn't normally do that unless its high shoulder.
Whatever its doing on impact is just shuttingdeer down.

This is part of what attracted me to the 180gr bullet...not neccessarily wanting a Barnes if you wanted near 100% weight retention and similar expansion....plus the terminal effects you're talking about.

Really interesting cause I never would have associated slower bullets of that size with bang-flops either. Like you said, nothing besides CNS hits.

If you can find a modern sporting rifle (semi auto) in 350 legend for sale in Canada, I would buy it.

Bolt action wouldn't interest me, I tried that with the 450 bushmaster and others but always ended up keeping the modern sporting rifle and selling the bolt
