350 REM Mag? NEW ? added

Wouldn't the 350 rem mag have more oomph?
The 358 is perfect for the action you have on hand. Brass is as easy and cheap as necking up 308W to 35cal. No mag box issues. It's like comparing a 308Win to a 30/06. Not much difference at all. It's a great chambering for a 20" lightweight rifle. Think 200s for deer and 250s for moose and bear. That exactly how I will use mine.

Need more "oomph" than that? .......... Sell your action and get one to fit a 358Norma, 9.3x62 or 375Magnum.

That's like saying the 30/06 is hands down better than the 308.

.

If you go back to the YT for caribou, plus moose and mtn grizzly, and you have a 30-06 Remington 700 BDL, and a 308 Remington 700 BDL side by each, and lots of brass/powder/bullets to choose from, which rifle will you grab?

I'd take the 30/06 for obvious reasons, but to state that the 30/06 is "a much better killer" over the 308 is where I would disagree. The velocity advantage is there but the improvement really isn't that much for most hunting situations. If I felt I did need a significant improvement over the 308, I'd buy a 300Mag of some sort, not a 30/06.

I only used the 308 vs 30/06 scenario as I thought it would be a fair comparison to the 358Win vs 350RM (or 35Whelen) given similar case capacities. :)

I know what you meant, just hassling ya ;)

To nitpick, because the 358 is (IMO) getting to marginal powder capacities for its bore size, and its starting velocities with big bullets is getting down to where under-expansion becomes an issue past 250 yards, I believe there is a much greater difference between the 358/350RM than there is between the 308/30-06

OK Now the next question 338 federal or 350 mag?

338 Fed ! it will perform GREAT out of your savage action as the lenght of the action will allow you to seat the bullets out there and increase case capacity like in my Tikka T3 . The 338 FED outperforms  the 358 WIN (and i have one ) easily and has a far better choice of Bullets too ! ;) the 338 Fed is a better long range cartridge then the 350 Rem mag BUT closer in the 350 Rem mag is a Hammer ! again JMHO RJ
