To my way of thinking 16.0 grs of 296 behind a 180 gr cast bullet in a .357 is too hot. I would start at 13.0 grs and work up in half gr increments. The following is the results of my work with a 190 gr SWC, in my 6" S&W M-27with Winchester small pistol magnum primers, H-110, and NNY cases.
12.0 grs - 994 fps,
12.5 grs - 1076 fps,
13.0 grs - 1116 fps,
13.5 grs - 1128 fps
14.0 grs - 1140 fps
Fourteen grs gave me sticky extraction, and although 13.5 extracted easily, the velocity seems to plateau at 13.0 grs. There was only 12 fps more velocity for that additional half grain of powder, so 13.0 grs will be my working load with this bullet.
