For Pistol Win.296///14g=1440fps. 16g=1600fps....45-90

To my way of thinking 16.0 grs of 296 behind a 180 gr cast bullet in a .357 is too hot. I would start at 13.0 grs and work up in half gr increments. The following is the results of my work with a 190 gr SWC, in my 6" S&W M-27with Winchester small pistol magnum primers, H-110, and NNY cases.

12.0 grs - 994 fps,
12.5 grs - 1076 fps,
13.0 grs - 1116 fps,
13.5 grs - 1128 fps
14.0 grs - 1140 fps

Fourteen grs gave me sticky extraction, and although 13.5 extracted easily, the velocity seems to plateau at 13.0 grs. There was only 12 fps more velocity for that additional half grain of powder, so 13.0 grs will be my working load with this bullet.

Normally I would agree, but with those cast bullets having a gas check you can potentially go up much higher (1500+ fps) as the gas check will prevent deformation and excessive vapourization of the cast bullet.

In my experience it is not possible to go near 1500 fps in a 357 revolver with the 180 gr. or 190gr. bullets you speak of, not safely anyways...those are heavy bullets meant for deep penetration and the velocity drop is a tradeoff!! Lyman shows a max. of 15.2 grs ww296 and a 168gr. bullet at 1307fps.

loaded some .357 mag ammo for my marlin 1894c rifle.....

using this powder will give maximum velocity with lower pressure than other powders.....

use a magnum primer to set them off....
don't have a large frame revolver to shoot them in!
