357 Mag Lever Action, Rossi or Henry?

As stated by the title, thinking of getting my first non-restricted for plinking and general fun. Which one would be the best buy?

The smoothness of the action is probably the most important factor to me and I would like to avoid tinkering with the gun too much.

Smoothness of action varies from sample to sample within each brand. Winchester design (Rossi) feels smoother to me irrespective of the individual sample. Others will swear by Marlin/Henry. Best to handle both in a store, if possible.

Not to rain on your parade but I hope you reload . I'd get a 22 lever instead or if you can afford close to 1 dollar every time you pull the trigger then be my guest. the 357 would be a fun rifle . me myself if I was going to buy a 357 rifle I'd go the extra mile and buy a new Marlin . as for the brands you mentioned you might want to handle them both first to see how they feel when you bring them up to you shoulder and then do your research on which one has the stronger action . another lever 22 would be a Browning . sometimes it get's boring shooting a 22 rifle to some people but if you have lots of coin then the 357 is the ticket.

I had a Uberti 1873 in 357 and found it to be super smooth and a beautifully fit and finish. I sold it due to my aging eyes as it was a top ejecting and I could not add a scope to it. Having handled both the Rossi and Henry they are very close in feel but I prefer the side eject so I can add an optic. I am currently looking for one at this time.

I have over 40 long guns. My Rossi 92 with 16" barrel in 357 is my favorite. It is smooth, accurate, RELIABLE (I have cycled many hundreds of rounds so far with zero issues, including my reloads. I have a skinner peep-site as the only upgrade. It is so light and handy. LOVE IT.

More money but Uberti makes a nice 357 lever. They have a couple good options.

I would agree. My two Uberti 1873’s are wonderfully accurate. I paid $1800 each about four years ago. One in .357mag/.38spl and the other in .45 Colt. So probably outside your price range. But build quality far above the Rossi and Henry. These are legacy lifetime firearms. Personally, I wouldn’t touch a Henry. I had the dreaded magazine failure and associated heartache trying to remedy that. The Rossi ‘92 I own is decent and accurate, but has its own issues.

I think the OP has chosen the proper caliber. The .357mag/.38spl is a great plinking as well as hunting round. So easy to load for and so many component choices as well as brass aplenty. The 1873 might not be everyone’s cup of tea though. The ‘92 is a different animal compared to the toggle link action.

Thank you for letting me know! Though it seems 357/38 recently have been around my price range and I would happily pay a bit extra for more bite. Can't deny the fun of a 22 though.

Beautiful rifle! You are absolutely right it's out of my price range but I wish they weren't, great stuff. I am partial to all styles of lever actions, nothing too tactical per se but all of the more "classic" silouettes really gives me the feels. Regarding the Henry hype and why: I read somewhere that Henry makes the Starbucks of lever guns, but I can't deny the aesthetic of their designs, just pretty.

From all the replies it seems everyone have their personal favorites which is awesome to see but also makes my decisions that much harder lmao. Appears I just have to make do with what makes me the happiest.

You are more than welcome . I like Marlin and Winchester and someone said that his Rossi worked flawless in a previous post. with a 16 inch barrel . I have never liked the looks of the Henry rifles nor the brand made in Italy . I like Marlins . built like a tank .

The Winchester 73 made by Miroku of Japan are outstanding the best finished rifle. But I have a like for Marlins over the years. Sold a perfect Winchester 73 and over paid for a lesser quality Marlin 1894 carbine with issues, just my preferred choice.

My favourite lever gun is my Henry Model X. Absolutely love it. I had a Henry side gate 30-30 that I sold for a Miroku made Winchester 94 and was very happy with my decision.

There’s really no wrong answers it seems.

And that seems to be the answer, there is no "best", just different. Pick the one (or 3) that you like best and go have fun.
Personally, for a fun 357 mag gun I would pick a rossi 92 or a win 73. If I was buying to hunt, I would get a Marlin 1894, due to the multiple sighting options.
