There seems to be a distinct lack of bear defence threads in the pistol forum!

Let's fix that - :D

1. - What's the minimum cal in a pistol that would do a number on a big grizz?

2. - Would you go semi auto or revolver, and why?

The minimum I would use would be .44 mag revolver of course :D . I will show pics of a new to me toy as soon as I get it finished and back from the gunsmith.

I love bear deffense threads, you are right not near enough of them lately ;) ;)

Let me adjust the 'ol armchairs...

Having never confronted a bear... never shot a bear... if I had to pick a pistol to pack for protection against bears I'd definitely want a revolver in .44magnum.

:D

Laniru let me have at it with his S&W last weekend and man, that thing has some punch.

Anything less... forget about it.

For what it is worth, the documents to fill for wilderness carry say you can't have anything less than .40S&W

-------------------

BTW, if our stupid barrel laws change the first pistol I am getting is a nice 4" revolver in .44Magnum Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I ran an old timer through the restricted last week who needed to upgrade his POL. He had an ATC for his Colt .38spl and a WWII nazi stamped Walther P38 9mm.

really?

I got the miners permit and the forms about a year ago... I never did fill it out... the hassle seemed to great.

I just remembered seeing a .40S&W portion on the form (It could have been a recommended) heheh.

Damn though, a .38spl and 9mm for wilderness carry... I guess it'd be good for cats and small bears ;)

Here is the new toy I was talking about

Soon enough it will look like this :D

Not mine but will look exactly like it except 4 1/4" instead of 4

For close range work only, kinda lose long range accuracy by taking 3 or more inches
off the barrel length.

That drugged up loser Timothy Treadwell should have had himself one of these bad boys, probably would have kept him and his idiot girlfriend alive.

Nevermind, it is s good thing he didnt have one :p

They say up North that if you are considering packing one for protection against grizz to make sure you file the front site down nice & smooth. That's so when the grizz stuffs it up your a$$ it doesn't hurt so much... ;) :p

I think that have another one that goes something like; the best thing you can do with a .357 when the grizzly is coming at you is put it in your mouth and pull the trigger... :D

IMO .357 not enough, I'd go with a .44mag with 300gr bullets ;)

.500 S&W Magnum in a 4.125" revolver. Accept no substitute! Shoot hard cast lead or jacketed rounds - or better yet - BIG bronze solids. Aim for the head.

Nah... FARK it, just pack an 870 with a Dlask 12.5"-er and use forster slugs.

Depends what you think will stop a bear. A .357 with a 180g solid will penetrate very well. Larger calibers make bigger holes but don't penetrate as well.
What would you use for a rifle to shoot one?

I don't know about that 300gr .44mag will dig as deep as 180gr .357mag if not deeper; it's all about velocity and ballistic coefficient… .44 is bigger but it also has more mass and heavier bullets/objects don’t stop as fast as lighter once.

I carried a 4" .357 for years. Never had to shoot any bears with it. It was very comfortable to carry in an Uncle Mike's flap holster.

I have upgraded to a .454 Casull SRH as I feel it is a far better choice for bear defense.

However if all I had was a .357 magnum, I'd carry it. It'd be better than my knife, fists or fingernails.

I shot a 6'6" Sq. black bear with my FA .454 Casull at about 10 feet. It worked well. The 300 grain XTP tore a big hole the full length of him, I think it would have done the same to a grizzly.

I remember reading an article by Larry Kelly of Magnaport fame. He shot a bear 5 times in the head with a .357 the sixth shot was with the revolver in the bear's mouth. When he skinned the bear, he found that the first 5 bullets struck the skull and slid along it, existing without penetrating the skull. He quit bear hunting with a .357 after that. Beats fists though.
