.357 Mag Winchester 94 Action Length, or other pistol cal M94s

This is what I’m looking for a suitable home for to load develop, after a No.1, Low Wall, or maybe .357 94 if it’ll accept modification for the length which sounds likely.

What is the OAL of that cartridge, could you seat the bullets out to an equal length as a 38-55 as they are basically same length as a 30-30. I have a 4 ser# mod 94 (circa 1895) in 38-55 that feeds wonderfully, then any old elevator from someones parts box would make a .357 action into a "longer cartridge" one quite easily...might have to re-think your offer on that .357 you were after as it mightr still be the most 'financially viable option...any of the other 94 options would require a much more expensive barrel swap.

Might this be another hagn project?

You’re darn close, similar constraints. :d Just more than one shot.

.357 Mega?

I’m leaning to staying metric with the parent case, few thoughts tumbling. Whole idea is the lightest, smallest rifle and round I’d carry in Grizz country outfitting and bush flying instead of the Glock 10mm. Has to be a meaningful upgrade in ballistic performance to accept the trouble of carrying a carbine over the pistol. I suspect the current government may remove my pistol option and would rather be ahead of the curve.

Currently intrigued by 9x50 Kemano in keeping with my .375 Kemano, 9x50 Morrison, or just 9x50 Mag following its parent case. Or keep naming rounds after rivers in the guide territory I’ve worked, have a couple other good rivers.

Had the same line of thinking with the 94, modifying the .357 lifter or replace it with a modded .30-30 (or .38-55 as you point out). OAL will be about 2.75”, the one pictured here is short as it only has a 124gr 9mm bullet in place for dummying, all I had on hand here.

as PO Ackley wrote chances of if you thought of it there is a good chance someone else could have or did ,,,,seems he may have been correct .
Dug this out of my project martini box ,the long on is a 5.6x50 RWS case and far to long to function in the small frame martini.Did the mock ups last summer took pic today
But all in the x50 is ###y looking number. Didn't run it through quick load ,as it wouldn't work in the martini and the max does..

I have a win. 94 commemorative in 44 40. It works great. I had heard of feeding problems but mine feeds nice and I don’t know why it wouldn’t, the longer lifter doesn’t have to angle so much and the shell rim stops a bit closer on the carrier. I compared my 92 and 94 actions side by side the 94 is slightly longer and the 92 seems a bit heavier. My 94 weighs 5.5 pounds with its 20 inch barrel and full length mag it feels really light

Atta guy that’s too neat, I’ll have to shoot for sure now :d The Ackley quote is a good one in this sport, for sure.

are you going to have a reamer made or start with a 357 mag or max and neck size reamer to grab the extra length and finish with a throater for the bullet ?

Got lucky today, found a .375” reamer with a .358” cutting pilot for $10. Now what to cut this chamber into, on the 94 offered his asking price if he rolls Canada Post into it, he declined, his prerogative but I viewed the offer as fair. :d Have a plan B single I’m considering it just isn’t cheap.

First of all I not questioning the many nuances of "wanting something different" that imperviates every gun nuts mind with a power tool or two laying around...I'v got a whole shop full of said machines & benches of "unfinished projects" myownself LOL. But... exactly what you want, in probably a better "thumper for wilderness protection" is commonly available. 38-55"s have been chambered in 94 actions for over 120 yrs. I realize that factory 38-55 are somewhat of an anemic ballistics "BP equivalent" round but they can be handloaded up to the same pressures that a 94 would withstand with 30-30 smokeless rounds...and you have a significantly heavier bullet for more terminal "instantaneous" stopping force than your pictured 158 gr .358 offering. To carry this line of thinking further, if you want even more force out of a 94 action, there is the .375 Big Bore in a strengthened 94 action for even more immediate Knock-down capability. Altho scarce, they are around...and immediately usable without any "trial and error" needed.

However I am somewhat intrigued by that round you hold as a single shot medium range deer round...single shot wouldn't interest me in any way for a "dedicated self protection tool", I would "carry" a .357 Mag wheel gun before I would leave the house with that SS .

This whole stage is just to see if the little round can do what I want to, and test it. I wouldn’t carry a 94 or any levergun, or single, for work frankly, it just happens a .357 94 is one of the easiest to get this shooting in to start testing. There’s a very particular reason I’m looking at this wildcat, as it’s one of the few that fits the idea that actually gets me excited, the .375 Winchester is too large in diameter for the thought that has me wanting to try this out.

till you actually have the cartridge in hand some may consider WHY ? It doesn't fill any void
once the long cased .355/.358 cartridge is in your hand it is now WHY NOT !!
Lets now see what will fit it and what it is capable of and if successful or not the journey is fun !

This is VERY exciting! Every once in a while, we get to watch someone do something out of the ordinary... And ardent is a guy that can both "get it done" and who without a doubt has real world practical end use for any project he embarks on. This fact makes it all the more interesting. How many wildcat/custom projects end up in a closet or at best, get out for a gentle use, fair weather hunt 5km from home? Not THIS project. If it cooperates with his intent, I for one will likely be jealous of the places it gets to go and things it gets to see!
