357 magnum for deer

I cleaned a big mule doe a buddy shot with a 19" barrel revolver carbine and a 158gr Ruko ammo. Bang flop at 50 yards with frontal chest hit and 20" penetration........no controversy if you want sleep at night use an RPG .......Harold

Only place in Canada I would take a deer with a .357 is the province of BC as it is illegal for them to wear kevlar under the body armour control act.

I swear the deer get tougher on CGN with every passing year, the OP is talking about using a well constructed bullet at a reasonable range with a carbine length barrel and there are still the naysayers

I use Hornady 158 XTP JHP going balls to the wall in my Ruger 77/357 for deer and hog

If I'm hunting at night for hog, I'll use a Penn 230 Thunderhead http ://www.pennbullets.com/38/38-caliber.html

Seems most keyed on 100 yards. Absolute max distance. Most deer in our group are taking at less than 50.

I would be using leverevolution rounds.

I was thinking of taking it as the gun is very light and easy to carry.

I am not young or in great health and weight of the firearm is a factor.

As to what else do I have to hunt deer with, well lets just say I think I have all the bases covered.

I use my Timberwolf while scouting and it is indeed a joy to carry for this old hunter.

I have no problem with hunting deer with it out to 100 yards with the irons.

Do you have a sling on yours?

I load 38 caliber (.357" diameter) 158gr Hornady bullets in my 358 Winchester Browning BLR at around 1800 fps MV for plinking. I wouldn't hesitate to use this load on deer out to 100 meters or so -

I do have a sling but hardly use it. Just like carrying a small stick really.

I am the idiot who sold his 44 magnum timberwolf to another CGN'r a couple of years ago. I would buy it back in a second and add a couple hundred to what I sold it for.

Okay, a little more info helps. The fact that you appear to be very experienced is important.

I got looking at the lever revolution ballistics and that stuff rocks. I love .357 in a revolver but the ballistics quoted by Hornady for a carbine make the calibre a whole new animal.

I would call your maximum range under a 100 yards, the one where from a standing position you can put 5 consecutive rounds into a 3 inch circle.

tbrwlf,...

I can GIVE you about 50 of these if you want to try em.

Loaded with the above powder, or most any of the other popular magnum pistol powders will do what you want for your hunting needs as you described. These bullets with the wide flat point are more for penetration & that is why I have them. I also like to use new or at least once fired brass with a factory crimp for good ignition, hense a hard hit on the game! I use to load them for bear protection when carrying my marlin.
No doubt they are heavier than needed for deer but still better than an arrow. Let me know & I will bring them Friday night....
Cheers..... Chris, woops I meant Ruffbird.:)

I picked a few boxes of these the other day

They run just over 1500fps in my Ruger, I have zero concern with penetration on game after seeing how it punched through a couple of fresh cut tree stumps.

Those 180 WFNGC with a full dose of #9 are great for Gators.

They also are a good round for a 35 Remington with some pistol powders for reduced loads but still giving around 357mag FPS

I differ from many members here....... and not to discount their experience......

I am always of the opinion that, if you have to ask the question, you already have your answer......

What is the true answer to minimum deer caliber? It probably hovers around 7.62x39, 44Mag, .223. Those are double the power of a .357

I'm starting to question if the 140GR barnes is really the best for 357 mag bullet out there. It seems like it's not meant for carbine velocities. Does someone know clearly what the best carbine deer bullet is?
