If you handload, you'll find that the H&R in 357 has a very long throat. You can seat the bullets way out and exceed published shorter OAL loads.For sure I won't re-chamber before I find enough brass to play

357 bullets are designed to preform at revolver velocities, pushing them faster might make them preform like varmint bullets, actually decreasing "performance".
That's just my opinion after experimenting with my Winchester 94 in 357 mag.

Thanks for the info fellas and offer Bilky. I keep reading that the H&R does have a deep throat. For simplicity and starters, I can just seat a bullet or dowel .300 longer than a 357 mag and see if it fits. If it fits fine, then 357 Max is an option.

For fun, this afternoon I seated a bullet in a 357 mag case and made the OAL 1.88 which I'm assuming is 357 Max lenght and it easily fit in my rifle. Looks like I will be looking to buy a small amount of brass to test out
Here's what I know from owning one of these guns and having it rechambered to 357 Max. I'm sorry that I can't just rely on speculation and hearsay.
The 357 Max brass will not chamber - close, but not good enough.
360 DW brass will probably chamber.
You get 357 Mag "+P" performance (mid-way between 357 Mag andf 357 Max) due to the fact that you can seat bullets out so far - in your case almost 0.300" farther than spec which gives you close to 357 Max available case capacity.
Use heavy bullets, i.e. 200 gr and you'll see about 2000 fps. You can use bullets intended for the 35 Rem and they'll hold up nicely on game. H110 and H4227 or IMR4227 are your best bets for powder choice - use up to 18.0 grs with a 200 gr bullet.

I have now performed four unauthorized rechamberings in my basement.

What I had tried to say, and meant to communicate, was that a gun that had not been rechambered to 357 Maximum (i.e. an NEF Handi-Rifle that was still in the factory 357 Magnum) had such a long throat that 360 DW would probably chamber, and 357 Maximum almost would.
