I picked up some 38/357 155grn swc GC lead bullets, looking to start a reload for it in either 38 spl or 357 mag as i have empty cases of both, looking through my reloading manual it jumps 150-158grn which seems common, lots of data, i was gonna use a 158 grain load, but not sure what powder to use with my 5" barrel, as i have some red dot, blue dot and 800x on hand, i was leaning towards starting the red dot since its a revolver at 5" and id need the faster burn rate. Ive read that some always use the 110 powder and 2400. Using a small pistol magnum primer, and a recomended starting load of just under 5grn at 4.7 for red dot, in the 357 mag case. What could you guys recommend doing? I weighed a few bullets with lube and gas check, they are about 162.4grn-165-2 in weight

There is no 'best' anything when it comes to reloading. I'd use the 158 grain CAST data too. Three grains won't matter and neither does the barrel length. So pick a powder and work up a load. I'd lean towards whatever powder is given with the accuracy load. If your manual has one. No need for a magnum primer unless you manual says to 'em.

Ya the magnum primers are a bit overkill, but its what they had in cci, i was just reading and wondering because some have 357 rifles and others have pistols, so barrel length came into the factor for burn rates to use was all i am mostly wondering about

+1 to using 158gr data, mag primers are required but will work just fine. i normally use h110/w296 for full house loads or trailboss, w231/hp38, or tightgroup.
