.358 caliber 200 grain bullets on deer?

The thing I like about 35 cal and up is you can shoot soft lead bullets loaded nice and slow and they do a wonderful job on deer.
Low on recoil Nice and cheap, very deadly.

I've read that the faster lighter bullets can do more destruction than the bigger slow bullets. (nice and slow is good for more than bullets)
I just cut up today a med sized bull moose shot with a 200gr Hornady FTX from a 358Winchester. Range was a tad over 200yds. Moose was hit in the ribs bullet travelling to the opposite side hind and did not exit. Very little meat damage overall. Bullet weighed 167grs.

I don't think you need to worry about those "faster lighter bullets" from a 358Win.

Can't say I've had a problem with my .243 but I pass on marginal shots with it. Last one was a stationary deer broadside about 30 yards - ran another 15 after being hit, stopped, settled down and died. Turned out the .243 took the top of its heart off.

My .270WSM on the other mangled a deer at close range but it was a bad shot on my part - quartering away and it jumped just as I shot. Hit the hind quarter and it kept going but made the mistake on crossing the trail in front of me. I took it down with another. That deer had meat damage.

Levers are better for where and how I hunt. That's why I switched. .243 gets the job done if I do my part but I always felt a bit undergunned with it.

I have used the 200 Hornady Sptz. in my 358 Win and in my 35 Rem. to
take a bunch of deer, no issue and no recovered bullets either, all lung shots.
Cannot ask for better performance.

I just got my 358win last year and have only takin 1 deer with it. I shot it in the ribs with a 200gr Hornady SP, deer only went 25-30 yards and was dead. No meat lost,...just a little around a couple ribs.
The 200gr Hornady SP is very accurate in my BLR,..200 SP OVER 47GR OF IMR 3031 = 3 SHOT KEYHOLE.

I have done a water test on the 250gr Nosler partition. It penetrated 6 2litre pop bottles leaving the front part of the lead in the 5th bottle, and the rest of the bullet stopped in the 6th.

Okay, this is killing me! What rifle did you buy in 358 win? I love that cartridge and have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye coming to me very soon I hope. However I will only be able to drool on it for the next few years as my oldest boy is now an apprentice hunter and once he can buy his own tag the youngest boy will be an apprentice so I will be an observer on their hunts. They have their own rifles inherited from the their grandpas so I won't even be able to watch them take down some game with the 358. Maybe I will make it my coyote gun!

My .358 Ruger Frontier loves [1/2" 100yard groups] the 250 Hornady SP with 40 grains of IMR 4198, Everything I hit with it drops in its tracks!

If you were referring to moi (as the OP), its a Browning Lightweight '81 model. I bought it to hunt moose this year using 225 gr and 250 gr Nosler Partitions.

Hunt fell through though so I bought some Hornady 200 gr Interlocks and plan to use them on deer.

Yes, I was referring to you the OP. Good choice on rifles! I have had a couple of the Browning BLRs in 358, like a fool I sold them (DUMB ASS!) I now currently have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, and according to the previous owner it shoots very well. I will be mounting a scope and test firing it this weekend hopefully if thanksgiving and wood cutting will offer me a break. I have all 200 and 225 grain loads right now to try, will report back with results when I have them.
