I have a custom 358 Norma built on a Mark 5 action very nice rifle

I couldn’t find a 250gr 35 cal with a better Bc than a 250gr 338

thats what i like, keep the recoil down.
 
The 338 will out penetrate the 358, and still provide you with lots of smacking bullet diameter. It will fly flatter, then the Norma as well, although within 300yds the Norma really won't give up much there. If DIFFERENT is your bag go 358 Norma, but the dies and ammo will both cost more ! Also there is MUCH more 33 cal selection too ! ALSO the 338 WIN Mag outperforms the Norma on paper anyhow ! :p RJ

This is correct.

Presumably, if you want "magnum" power, you want to either shoot longer distances while retaining energy, or shoot moderate distances with a larger bullet.

The .338s and 375's handle both jobs better than the .358 Norma.

If you are shooting a moose at 100 yards, they all do the same thing. But so does a 7-08.

Yes, correct. The only reason to actually go with a 358 Norma is if for some reason you think it's interesting. There are plenty of practical reasons to go with something else.

I feel your frustration :(. And, as long as we're subjected to sales hype and promotion, it won't stop:rolleyes: anytime soon. As previously mentioned, I have a pair of 358's. I wouldn't feel ill at ease anywhere in North America, on virtually any game on the continent, with a 358NM as my firearm of choice. ;)Hang in there Paul. I have a ;) 375CT that may well get the next call for Mr. Moose :).
 
This thread is kinda like "which car is best?" Everyone will have a different opinion as to what they prefer. btw the 8x68S will out perform them all, and the Aston Martin DB9 is the best car! ;)
 
I built my first and only 358 Norma Mag some where in the 70's. Remington at that time produced a short action 700 in .350 Rem Mag with a 24 inch barrel. I had need of the short magnum action to build a .458x2 for a friend in New Hampshire and I wanted to use the pull off 35 calibre 24 inch barrel... I fitted that barrel to a Sako Magnum action I had and chambered it to the .358 Norma. I whittled the stock down and it weighed about 7.5 pounds... and it hurt like hell to shoot. Sold it in about 1980 here in BC to a guy from the Yukon I think... Never regretted selling it. I shot a few deer with it and I had the notion of grouse loads using pistol bullets at one time too.
 
Be interesting to see the actual drop and drift differences between a 250gr 33 and 35 out to 5-600 yards from the same case.

Haven't used the calibre in the field, ;) yet. With the offered selection of bullet weights available in factory ammo and bullets available for reloads, I fail to see the calibre not being able to handle game in North America. With that in mind, handling much of what's available on other continents shouldn't be an issue either. Earlier in this thread a 'question' was brought up on penetration compared to other calibres of close by size. To increase penetrations, a consideration may be the use of a bullet along the lines of the 225gr Barnes TSX FB.
