358 Winchester

Have one better for my purposes, .375 Kemano it’s a .375 Whelen improved with a short neck. You fireform brass by firing a .30-06 round in the chamber, as the shoulder is in the same position as the -06. Works like a hot damn, 260 Accubond at 2550, and fits long .375 bullets in a standard mag. Something I struggled to make work with the Whelen.

Really cool. Doesn't look like a lot of shoulder to headspace off. Did you say ....improved.. if not improved would help give more shoulder.

I also found the comments about the 338 federal interesting. Shoot 338wm, and it's very true about 338 bullet shapes. One example is iirc a 165gr .338 Barnes X. Being copper its long, but what do you really gain over a 165gr .308.

There is however one disadvantage to 35cal I haven't seen mentioned. Bullets are hard to find, and comes and goes in fads. Most common place to find bullets are gun shows and degenerate nimrods like us. Tattered 30 yr old boxes, with bullets that have age annealed or had the cores go powdery. Can lead to inconsistent on game performance.

It’s plenty fortunately, should see the straight unimproved .375 Whelen. Yea she’s blown right out, and 35 degree shoulder.

Oddly enough when the Raptor was developed it ended up with the same shoulder and case taper, same neck length. Convergent evolution that made me smile about the design choices I had to make for it.

The chambered round in that surplus action doesn't show a black tip. The one in fat fingers has. Did they glue the tip in on that one ?

Were there any improvements over the .358/ alleged .366 ?

Make fun of Tilley Shoemaker and his ads for the wildcat mauser he doesn't want and I'll laugh. Hell, I'll join in.

Make fun of the 366 Wagner and its namesake and you're gonna lose me. Long live Wagner, long live the. 366!

Avoided it long as I could as one of them still had things to offer, and what’s motivating it was so transparent. Happy to disagree with people, even vehemently, long as it’s mature and with respect. Last straw was when I just saw his new location, it’s clear he’s never been there nor understands it. You certainly know what I mean.

Sorry folks for having to do this here.

Awwww Ardent you’re such the gracious one………

The 358win sure isn’t popular around here.
Had a bunch of new brass on my tables for a buck a brass.
Not one fingerprint to be found on them t’uther than my own.

Might be time to find another one…………

riverrest’s current CGN existence is stumbling around here scoffing at things it’s clear he doesn’t understand. I feel bad for him and hope that changes, in the meantime it’s best to ignore him til he cheers up.

Who is this riversrest you speak of ?
For the life of me I can not find anything with that moniker ...
As always one has to sift the chaff to find the Golden Wheat in these types of threads.

I was thinking of taking the .358 BLR to a driven hunt in the Black Forest this fall.

Brother in law said I can have his Haenel NXT in 8mm Mauser as a loaner which I greatly appreciate as the rifle can be quickly fitted with suppressor and night vision optics for stand hunting.

In addition .358 ammo is pretty much unobtainium over there so it was an easy decision not to go with .358, otherwise you have to deal with shipping "explosives" which is a pita.

Btw. I forgot to mention that many places overseas start mandating lead free projectiles for hunting. So, If you have a rifle in a calibre that isn't available with lead free bullets you're outta luck ! Hang it on the wall or ship it to Canada...

I just saw a Ruger 77 MKII in 358 win listed on the EE today, at a decent price. Anyone still looking for a 358 winchester rifle should check it out quick, because it probably won't hang around for long.

It’s interesting that the seller doesn’t have any photos up of it whilst the other ads do?
Inquiring minds wish to know why?

The only one I saw was a tang safety, not a Mark II.

True enough, with an equal bullet and equal shot placement, the results are likely the same, however, the .308 with heavies cannot reach the same velocities as the .358, if that matters, which for most gun-nutters, it does... we like to argue over minutiae.
I always liked the 358Win either way.

Who has a 358Win reamer in Canada?
