Anyone else using 36 410 in the field ? I know most say it is not viable or ethical in the field but for years I have used a sxs and pump on my woodcock and farm quail hunts with 3/4 oz handloads and some tight choke with great success. Never could get the load velocity above 1050 fps but with the small birds it dispatched them with authority. Anyone handloading 3 inch 1/2 oz loads with 7.5 shot to get the velocity up for larger birds ?

I use a 410 for small game. Mostly squirrel
I use a few but my favorite is a stevens 301 turkey edition with a red dot. 1/2oz of copper 6s will drop a big old black out of the top of the tallest oaks. For feathered game I prefer a sxs full chokes and 7.5 shot. I generally use 2.5" shells

I like it up north, mostly for head shots on grouse. Very popular in the north.

Absolute worse gun my Dad started me on for ducks was
a phukn single shot 84 Cooey 410.
A twelve year old or any one starting shot gun should
get a gun they can hit birds on the wing,.
The 20 gauge would be xlnt or even a 28 gauge but my Dad was frugal.
For ground birds he didn't buy Long Rifle , only .22 short.

I think a 410 bore works out to a 67.6396 gauge...
It's the weight of how many balls .410" diameter make 1lb.
So absolutely tiny. I'm not sure of where the 36 gauge info came from? I have heard it before though. Think it's an old incorrect thing Europeans would reference.

Don't care much, just pointing it out. I like facts.
I've always thought of .410 wingshooting as a setup for experts, not beginners.
True to some extent but I think the answer to the 36 410 is understanding it's short comings as to range choke a shot size requirments. Breyben seems to have it figured out with his turkey choke red dot tree rat 410. It's about range , choke and shot size not a gun for all but a fun gauge for sure in my books. My Simmons built model 42 has also posted some half decent target scores through the years if I do my part and i am no expert by far.
I HANDLOADED 410g back in the 1960’s using a filed down nail for depriming and wooden dowels to tamp down the wads in 3” purple papered CIL cases. The over powder wad was a rolled up ball of aluminum foil to protect the toilet paper wad in front from shredding and burning. I think there was just a bit more than 1/2oz of #6 shot loaded to facilitate a crimp that looked sort of okay. Killed about 18 pheasants per year with this and a Cooey 410g (that didn’t fit me) on a grape farm when I was a kid. 15 yard max !! Killed squirrels, cottontails and one jack rabbit. If thats all you had then you found a way to make it work. If you can’t be with the one you love then love the one your with

It's a very popular bird getting round where I'm from. Shots are usually within about 20 yards, birds on the ground and chokes are full. Shot size is usually #6, but preferably #4 if its available. All lead.
I've tried it and it works for that application. But I prefer a 28 gauge. Or a 16 for that matter. I find I've got more range with those than the .410. But its up to the individual to decide what they like. I'm glad we have choices.
