I have a M70 stainless classic in a mcmillan with ptg one piece bottom metal. Very accurate but the 24" no. 5 barrel is a pig. Been planning to rebore and chop to a 416 rem, or maybe a 458 of some sort. Undecided. Or trade for something similar. Any ideas?
If you wanted to lose significant weight off that rifle, I'd have it bored to .475" and build a 475 Ackley on it.......cut to 21-22" and have a real handy heavy hitter. If that is too much cartridge for your needs, the 475-458 WM will out do the 458 by nearly 100 fps with 500 gnrs. An honest 2150-2200 fps at less pressure than the 458. With these kind of expansion ratio cartridges you will lose virtually nothing velocity wise by cutting back to 21 or 22"
