Hi guys,

I am considering two rifles that are almost identical with prices that are close enought to make me think of both of them. One of the rifles is in 375 H&H Mag and the othe is a 458 WM. I have a hankering for a large bore rifle right now, do not ask me why, and I am thinking of both of them.

MY question is which one would any of you go with? I reload, so I can download or upload as I see necessary, so versatility due to handloading would be a point. I have been told that the 375 is more accurate and better for longer distances, but the 458 has that ability to be loaded for a big hit with a bigger bullet.

I have shot a 375 with a light bullet, light powder load and it was rather pleasant to shoot. I, however have never shot a 458 and would also like a little info on what the light loads can be like; I have shot a 45-70 on a regular basis for example.

Any help you guys can give me would be much appreciated.

I currently own both, if these are loaded with the same bullet weight each cartridge will push them to about the same velocity, 375 with 300 gr bullet at 2600 fps with 150 yrd zero will drop 2.5" at 200 yrds and 12.6 at 300 yrds, the 458 with same weight bullet at 2600 fps will drop 2.8" at 200 yrds and 14.5" at 300, vey small differences the advantages become clear when you go to the extremes in bullets weight, the 375 becomes flat shooting when loaded with lighter bullets, and the 458 becomes an excellent "stopper" when loaded with the heavy weight bullets.

If your a handloader the question becomes where are most shots taken, within' 200 yrds both will do, beyond 200 it goes to 375 and inside of that the 458 downloaded for deer or loaded up with good bullets they will drop anything in north america with no more meat damage than a "regular hunting rifle".

375= ability to shoot a bit flatter
458= ability to hit harder at closer ranges (and a hoot with cast bullets)
 
.375 H&H is a fine choice, it gets my vote for versatility. It has lots of power for the big stuff.
 
depends on what you have in the rack already......if you have something like a 338 Win Mag or a 35 Whelen...you might want the 458 just to have bigger jump in the caliber range.....if your current bores top out at a 30 cal...which they probably do, if your like 90% of us,...then get the 375......IMHO

personally...I have a 35 Whelen and have owned a 458 and a 375 bore, mine was a Weatherby chamber....but if I get another "big bore"..it'll be a 416............. :D

375 or 458

I have shot them both and the .375 takes the vote for me. It shoots plenty flat and will take anything that walks the earth. :D As others have posted if you have something close to the .375 then jump up to something bigger like the .458 :shock:
 
The 375 is my vote, you can pretty much hunt anywhere in the world with one!!

For a stopping bore, I would go with the 458 or larger off course! :mrgreen:

The 458 is no slouch in trajectory with a 350gr x bullet@ 2550
or a 400gr x @2400.And it is just plain FUN!
Overall the 375 is a better all around rifle,But who cares that's why we all need 15 rifles.
 
get the .458. The 375 has being taken over by the .338. When using cast bullets the .458 is a dream .Offhand the .458 will shoot as good as you can hold with cast bullets . 1 inch at 50 yards is no problem from the bench,What more do you need.
