375 H&H recoil and why shortening barrel is good or bad

NECG sells this little dew-hickey:

Rubber finger cushion wraps around trigger guard and protects your middle finger. Will not scratch the finest guns.

Here is an interesting article on Ed Stevenson, a very well known Alaskan guide. My old man has actually met him a few times, a very interesting fellow so I have heard.

http://www.z-hat.com/Stevenson.htm

An interesting article about another person who actually uses his rifles for what they were built for.

What no collectors rifles or bird guns   . This guy must be out of his mind and not know what he is talking about! Why would anyone cut off a barrel down to 20" on a heavy hitting big game rifle? Only about 45 years of experiance with big rifles on big game, phhhhhhht........ How can he know what he is talking about :D

:D

Some people will never admit that they were wrong, but you know what thats OK. It is only the internet, and some of us actually venture out into the real world sometimes and get experiance that you cant get without doing so

I would say go for it...I think 22" would look alot better than 20"...I had my 416 Taylor done at 22" ....20" was my first choice but Rembo talked me out of that:) Rembo's was 24"..mine had to be different...as far as muzzle blast and noise 20", 22", 24" or 26" is all the same...loud is loud with a big bore...heck I don't think my ported guide gun is all that bad...of course I'm behind it not beside it...lol

Geol - I say go for it. I choose to buy a Ruger .338 soon to be bobbed at 20-21". I plan on shooting for groups before and after, just to see if the increased blast has any effect on accuracy. Will try with a normal and a faster rate powder. I plan on a NECC rear sight to match with a bane-type front. 225 gr. Barnes for now and may try the 325 gr. from Wildcat Bullets.
Toys are for kids, and making better toys is just more fun.

'Dew-Hickey'

1899.
I have a Marlin 1895GS in .45-70. The straight stock & lever make 'things' a little uncomfortable on the middle finger when using some of the heavier handloads.:( The 'Dew-Hickey' looks like it could solve the problem. Have you tried one & if so, how did it work out & what do you think of it? How much? In Victoria, does Island Outfitters happen to handle the product?:)

I have used these New England Custom gun thingies since 98 on Ruger #1s in heavy calibers up to .500 Nitro Express. They are very effective and reduce the beating to the other fingers. They slide on quite easily yet I have never lost one or had one fall off. I found it made a big difference especially in the light weight Ruger #1 carbine in .45/70. I wish they were easier to find, I bought two directly from NECG and have been swapping them on and off of many rifles since. I wish I had five more of them. I'd buy them if there was a Canadian source.

Me too!

Something makes me want to chop every barrel I can find for a while :D :D

Salty,

You said it! I can't believe that so many have spoken out so vehmently against geologist cutting his .375 barrel.

I say - CUT IT, CUT IT, CUT IT then post some pictures showing us cool it looks! :)

Jeff.

JEEZ!!! If you own it & want to 'cut' it, go for it! Personally, IF I wanted something shorter, that's what I'd buy. Basically, I don't 'like' the general concept of 'cutting'.

Years ago my custom Sako .416 had been built with a 24" barrel, my gunsmith wouldn't here of anything shorter. I tried to get him to cut it but he didn't want to, one night I took out the hacksaw and lopped off 2". Then he had to tune it up.

Mike,
Now that is how to get a gunsmith to listen! I had a custom .416 Rem mag on a Winchester 70 action with a 20.5" barrel. It gave up some velocity but not enough to matter and that little rifle sure handled well. I traded it off and the guy won't trade it back. I think I need to make another.

Boomer & 1899 & Cassul, thanks for the info.

I am getting some NECG stuff soon and I'll add the doo-hicky to the list (those are NECG sights on the pic I posted)
