375 H&H vs 375 Ruger vs 9,3x62

The 375 Ruger is Well just plain BORING ! :( The 375 H&H and the 9.3 x 62 have both Class and History ! jmo RJ

Ps; My experience with a 338 Win Mag is its a Great KILLER but i think the 375 H&H accepts heavier ( 275-300) bullets Better ! again jmo :)

A while back, I picked up a 375 H&H and a short while ago, added a 9.3x62 better known as the;) .366 Wagner to to my little harem to make,;) things interesting. For an added touch of class, I fairly recently picked up a custom 375 Chatfield Taylor:d.

I've always been interested in the 376 Styer would really like to give one a try someday.

As to Phil he promotes a lot of different cartridges the .375 Hawk/Scovill is another I would like to try out.

“My experience with the .375 Hawk/Scovill has shown it to be efficient, powerful, flat shooting, and an ideal cartridge for all Alaskan game.”
Phil Shoemaker, The Legacy of Lever Guns, Winter 2000

I have used both the 375 Ruger and the 9.3x62 on game. Oddly enough I've never used the H&H, though I saw it used on Saskatchewan Whitetails and plains game in RSA. The Ruger killed my cape buffalo at a little over 100 yards with one well placed shot. Kind of underwhelming really...one shot right through the shoulder and that was that using the oft-maligned 300gr DGX. I also shot several other beasties but the buff was the real test subject. The 9.3 killed a bison at just a hair over bayonet-range using 286 Norma RNs. To be fair, the bullets were softer and the bison was MUCH bigger and closer than the cape buff but it still took 3 shots and one in the back of the toque to give that bull quietus. Still, he only went 10 yards and had I been using a more stoutly constructed bullet I might have gotten more penetration. It was a pretty extreme test of a traditional cup and core bullet...slamming into a ton of beast at full muzzle velocity. The 375 killed deer just fine (shocker), created a shockingly large wound channel on a coyote, and laid low zebra, oryx, kudu, impala at the hands of back40sniper.

Were I going back for Cape Buffalo I would have a hard time deciding what rifle to take. I'd feel just fine sneaking in on mbogo with my 9.3 using something like a 300gr A-Frame and there is something exciting about slipping through the jesse with an iron-sighted Mauser with a flag safety and a belly full of ammo. But I also have a 416 Rigby which could hardly be challenged as a buffalo cartridge and being a scoped rifle it would work well for shots in open country. Then, of course, there is my 470 which really deserves a trip to Africa. I think the only practical solution would be to take someone else with me to carry a couple of rifles to ensure that I have everything covered. Because my 300 H&H really should go as well.

I've seen quite a variety of PH rifles, everything from a 22 Hornet for finishing shots on plains game up to a 505 Gibbs. My Ph in Zim carried a 458 Win Mag...the most beautifully weathered Post-64 Model 70. Then again, he was murdered by an elephant while carrying that very rifle which leads to all manner of unhelpful speculation. Another PH I met carried a 475 #2 Jeffrey although he was carrying a bolt rifle when he was killed by a buffalo. Saw several 470s that worked just fine as well as a 600 Nitro carried confidently. One PH shot an elephant in self-defense with his 470 while I was in camp. One thing to keep in mind is that these guys generally don't have a ton of money. Sure, guys like Ivan Carter have an inside track to the guys at Heym and carry beefy 600 NEs, but lots of other guys are just ex Parks guys or farmers who were displaced during the land seizures so they're far from rich so you can expect to see a lot of variety in the rifles they have to use. The one thing about PHs is that they can handle their rifles which, in the end, is more important than the headstamp on the cartridge.

It's in its infancy.... Not about that..... I am in same boat as you..... But sounds like more of a place for guys that want to stretch their legs and experience and swap stories about the length they are willing to go to get game etc.

More about having more adventure in your life hunting than anything.... And comraderie and just wanting to challenge yourself....

Like I said.... Infancy..... And it's Ardents direction to take.... Just my understanding at this point......
