Who has tried one of these .375 Ruger rifles? I am most interested in a 20" Alaskan variety.

Please tell me about any experiences you have had?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Some comments by Camp Cook:

Gatehouse the more I look at the ballistics of the 375 Ruger the more I like it...

I had a 375 H&H for years but it just didn't do for me what I wanted.

If the 375 Ruger had come out at the same time as the 375 RUM I would have probably gone with the Ruger instead due to it's ballistics in a standard length action.

Yes I do believe that Ruger has hit upon a winner with this new catridge/rifle combo...

After a bit more thought I totally see the advantages of the 375 Ruger and may have to buy one to complement my 375 RUM...

My 375 RUM gives awesome performance but I use it more for longer range shooting situations whereas I would use a 375 Ruger for close in thick cover where shots would be max 200 yards.

What I'm saying is I can totally see the advantages of a shorter standard length bolt throw with a short 20" to 22" barrel.

I may have to buy myself another rifle/catridge combo...

Here's a pic that compares my custom .375 Ultra carbine with a pal's Ruger Alaskan. When loaded with normal bullet weights the only real difference between the two is about $3500. For the extra money I can make better use of 350 and 380 gr bullets, and carry another 2 rounds in the magazine. Both rifles would be twice as accurate as they need to be if they were half as accurate as they are. The Ruger has a better trigger!!

Aaahhhh no way I didn't say that did I?

Don't any of you believe those quotes that GH posted and its just not right to wake up too such lies good thing I didn't even have a chance to make my coffee yet I would have spit it all over my keyboard in horror...

OK OK and now remember I'm not thinking right yet need coffee, I'll admit this much after playing around this year with my 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ = 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps and my new shortened to 21" barreled 375RUM = 260gr Accubonds @ 2850fps or 300gr anything @ 2650fps and my 26" 375RUM = 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps & 300gr @ 2800fps, I will conceed that the 375 Ruger is a very good all round package for the average guy that wants a 375 caliber but has issues with recoil.

I'll never conceed this king thing that some here push so relentlessly a good all round package yes king as my 2 1/2 year old would say "never"... :p

There are a few more very favorable quotes of yours in the links:D

My 20" barrel shoots 260AB bullets at 2755fps (83gr H4350)and 300gr bullets at 2600fps(80.5grH4350) . The New King is a gem.

No way... there can't be even more positive posts there just can't be...

My 21" barreled 375RUM loads that I shared above where the first loads that I tried they are definately not even close to top loads I'm thinking I may try and push the 260's to 2900fps just to see how the recoil is but with a .473 BC the velocities are fine where they are.

So yes I just admitted that the 375 Ruger is fine but so is my 375JDJ... :)

I am going to have one for sure. I am also going to have a p-17 that I picked up re-barreled to .375 Ruger as well. I like the African more than the Alaskan and my build will be along the same lines.

I have had 4 of the 375 rugers, both the african and the alaskan great rifles lightweight easy to carry. The ones I have/had seem to think they are varmint rifles, little tiny groups seem to be the norm on both the 375 ruger and the 416 ruger.

We just sent one in for warranty on behalf of a customer. It is an Alaskan model purchased this year, and refused to feed the first round out of the magazine, regardless of the factory ammo used.

Amazingly, SnapShots in PQ responded in a reasonable time frame, and Ruger has agreed to replace the rifle.

I'm sure it's just a situation of one bad apple, as I don't recall any disparaging threads about the Alaskan or African rifles.

I don't think there will be much difference in performance between 2850fps and 2900fps.:)

That velocity was out of a 21" barreled 375RUM with 95grs IMR4350 not the 375 Ruger... :)

I'm trying to figure out a load using RL17 that I just bought I'm interested in if I can get higher velocity with less pressure like it is supposed to do with the small WSM cases.

Who gets 2850FPS with a 260 grain bullet from the .375 Ruger?

The ballistics for the Hornady ammo is 270gr bullet @ 2840fps and 300gr @ 2660fps, form the 23" barrel African. John Barsnes chronoed his 23" African and the 270 load at 2845fps.

I get 2755fps with a 260gr bullet and 20" of barrel. I think that the Hornady 270gr stuff chronoed at 2730fps...Losing 3" of barrel and a 100fps drop sounds about right.

I have not seen any real world numbers on the 23" African, only the Hornady numbers, which I take with a grain of salt as with all ammo company velocity claims.
I got 2720fps with the 'Gatehouse' load of 84 grains of H4350 behind the 260 Accubond.
The Hornady factory 270's went 2712fps. This was from my chrono at ~ 750m above sea level. Air temp was between +28 and 0 degrees.

Like I said, John Barsnes from RIFLE and HANDLOADER magazine got advertised performance from the factory ammo in his African.

I am sure a guy could get pretty close to 2850fps wiht a 260 bullet in the African rifle.

Although we are pretty much pissing in the wind, since a 260gr bullet at 2720-2750fps is going to hit hard up close and is an easy 400 yard performer, and adding 100 or 150fps isn't going to change that.;)

Thanks for all the discussion guys! I'm really looking forward to this rifle. I owned a Magnaported model 70 in.375 H&H awhile back, and I came across some .375 reloading supplied the other day that got me thinking about getting another... :)

I just went by my local Whoresale Sports store and hefted a stainless Alaskan. It's a very handy rifle!

Have any of you seen the "Diamondblack" version? I wonder how durable the finish is...

Jeff.
