.375 Ruger....

I'm going after my first moose this fall with my 375 Ruger (Alaskan, with the factory black nitron finish).

I know that I like the rifle, and I like to eat moose, so that's what I know about that.

Whats the average velocity you can get with a 300gr bullet out of the 375 ruger?

I have a box of Hornady 300gr Solids @ 2660fts, but realguns.ca loads their 300gr loads up to 2800fts, is that to hot of a load? To me that sounds like a dangerous hot load?

check out the data below and let me know what most of you guys that load for them think of the 300gr loads listed.

I dont think he has proper pressure testing gear so its possible his loads are too hot. 2800fps would be a bit fast for me but I've done 2700fps with a 300gr NAB with no issues.

Work up, see what happens...;)

The Hogdon Powders site shows 2660 fps. with the 300 gr. bullet ahead of a compressed load of 82.5 gr. of H4350.
The PSI is 59,600.

The hottest load they show for the 350 gr. TSX is 2396 fps. ahead of 71.0 gr. of Hybrid 100V for an average of 60,000 psi.

I myself, tend to work loads of much less pressure.:)

Generally nothing to be afraid of at 60K psi, really? Paying attention to max published loads and pressure signs is paramount of course, but lots of cartridges run in lots of rifles at that pressure...

The 375 Ruger is rated for 62000PSI, so 60 000 PSI should offer no issues whatsoever.

Interesting rifle.

Also interesting is that they chamber some pretty traditional cartridges such as 7x64, 6.5x55, 9.3x62, but they DON'T use the obsolete H&H. Possibly it's too long to fit comfortably in that action, which is one of the drawbacks of the old H&H.

Yeah the poor H and H sticks out like a sore thumb, such a cumbersome lengthy thing for no return compared to more intelligently designed cartridges. Of course they only had so much to work with in 1912 so for pretty much 18th century technology it is what it is.

Yes, the H&H was/is a great cartridge, but nobody would dream of introducing a case shaped like that nowadays. Well, not in a very long time actually...50 years at least. :)

There is some OLD stuff that is still just as GOOD as the newer stuff and the the REAL KING the 375 H&H proves that everyday ! :D RJ

I use cartridges that are well over 100 years old, and of course they work just fine. Fact remains that nobody has designed a tapered case like the H&H in decades, and for good reason- rifle and cartridge designers have learned much since the H&H's introduction.

Great account of the NEW KING :

Knocked a youngish Eland Cow this weekend. 220m with 200gr GS Custom at 3100fps. She was standing quarter away so it went in just next to the gut on the right and travelled through to the left armpit. It did not hit a single bone and neither did it tough any of the good meat.

Good piocs of the GS Custom bullet performance, too

It continues to interest me on how many African hunters have embraced the NEW KING. Especially as we always hear how "traditional" African hunters are and how nothing but the 9.3x62 or 375 H&H is ever used....

A typical PH uses what he can get. You can just about bet that a young guy starting out is packing a rifle that someone gave him. That may be a rifle older than him from a relative, or could be something new and cheap that a client left.

Think about it for a bit; the guy is lucky to make $150 a day plus tips and has to show up with his own truck to get that. He often is in no position to pick and chose his weaponry. Even if he wants to get something else it may take a year to get his application approved. It probably requires that he sell something that he has. Ammo? Well everyone knows some of the names of the better bullets out there, but he could just be packing whatever the last client gave him or gave his buddy and they swapped. Wait until you see one with at least 3 different types of ammo on his belt. Traditional calibers are prized as much for their ability to shoot free ammo as for anything else.

These guys aren't PH's

They are average Joe hunters.

What is clearly happening is that these average Joes are embracing the NEW KING and hunting with it. Goes to show that the Ruger/Hornady campaign of getting the NEW KING accepted into Africa is working. this is but one example. They are stoked on having a great, affordable rifle in a great cartridge available

The true King of the 375 bore is the Rum. Most universal is 375 H&H. Everything else is simply a flavor of the week, reduced to cult status at the whim of some firearms exec. Many places in the world that dangerous game is hunted only 375 H&H is available, perhaps charging with a bayonet or banana would work.

Had 5 new shooters up to the range today. They tried out a bunch of different guns. I take the 375 Ruger up there for these things because there sometimes is a guy that wants to try it out. they all took one shot, including the lone female that came. All had giant grins on their faces after the shot. They filmed each other, I wish I had taken some video to post here, but I have to run these things. :)

Anyway, they had a blast shooting the NEW KING! :)
