.378 Wby

I shot one in Ruger #1 before it went to Alberta. Recoil was stout but manageable. First shot for effect went into a five gallon bucket full of water. The explosion blasted the bucket into bits and pieces, all of the water went straight up about thirty feet into the air and came raining down on the shards of plastic that had been a bucket. Wish I had asked somebody to video it!!!

I suggest you contact Rodagra here on the board, one of his sons has loaded a lot for this cartridge, and in fact that was who kindly provided me my test ammo.

The advantage of the .378 Wby is that it cleans and cooks your game all at the same time as killing it......:p

When I get some loads put together, I want to make some videos. Should be good entertainment.

Will contact Rodagra and see if he has any suggestions, thanks.

I hope by then I can resolve the issues I am having with my video camera and my computer - they don't seem to be getting along. I have videoed my self shooting full power loads from my .375 Ultra from all field positions, and in slow motion is great fun to watch. Might make for some interesting comparisons between the 602 and the MK-V rifles, and the Ultra and and the Weatherby rounds if we could run the videos together.

back to Boomer..

Yeah, I can imagine. I had an audience when I shot the .378 Wby, and I offered all of them a chance to shoot it. They all declined.........:D

I have had a .378 Wby for 15+ years. Built by Answer Products (Sam Johnson). All the goodies - Kreiger barrel, Ti lockset M70 safety,
The muzzle brake is a must... little noisy, but worth the comfort.

I use exclusively H4831, Fed M primers and Weatherby brass.
Best accuracy is Hornaday 270 & 300 gr. They do tend to come undone VERY quickly on game.... even as small as a whitetail. Remind me of the old SX .223 varmint bullets out of a 22-250.
Hornaday has suggested that the velocities are exceeding the bullet design.
270 gr Horn. - 119gr H4831 - 3250 FPS - 5 shot average
300 gr. Horn - 112 gr. H4831 = 3050 FPS - 5 shot average.
THESE LOADS MAY NOT BE SAFE IN YOUR FIREARM.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!!!!

I have also used Nosler Partition ( Old ones with the driving band)
A - Square Radial (explosive results)
Bitterroot
Barnes
Barnes X
Swift
They all grouped well. Barnes did present some copper fouling issues - Particularly the X.
My experience has been that the .378 will shoot just about every bullet around with reasonable accuracy.
Unfortunately, it is not for the faint of heart. Plugs AND muffs off the bags. Warn the folks at the next bench that you are about to shake the dust out of the rafters on the covered firing line.

Before you settle in to shoot the .378 pause to consider that MOST of the tales about its neck snapping. eyeball popping recoil are propegated by folks who have never fired one. If you have the right stock design, proper fit, muzzle brake and a good pad, it is not at all uncomfortable.
Stout but not uncomfortable

Perfomance on game is awe inspiring to say the least.
Shoots ballistically like a 06 - 180 gr out to 300 yds
Hits like a Mack Truck..

Thanks for the info. I sure wish Hornady would bring out a Interbond in 270gr SP. I noticed they make a 300gr RN IB.

444 shooter....
Try the 300 gr.
Not much penalty for added bullet wt.
Go for the square load - 300 gr @ 2700 FPS in this caliber.
Trust me.... the game will not notice the difference between 300 and 270 gr.
One of the few cartidges that will perform the "Yankee Heart Shot" (up the rear... throught the body lengthways, through the heart and out the front);)

I agree, the TSX might be the best North American bullet for the .378 Weatherby. I would like to see what the .378's potential is with the Rhino 380 gr. My velocity with that bullet loaded in my 20" .375 Ultra is 2300 fps. I would think it would make 2400 or slightly better in a long barrelled .378. As yet I haven't heard of a Canadian retailer picking these up, but I intend to continue using them.

What powder where you using? Is that from a Mk V? That is some speed you are getting.

I have a 338/378 Weatherby Accumark, and I love it.
It comes with a muzzle brake, and the recoil is mild.
The muzzle brake really works.
Right now I'm using 108 grains of RL-22 powder 225 grain Barnes X bullets and CCI Mag primers.
Unlike the 30/378 you can get factory stated velocity with this caliber quite easily.
One of these days when I'm not developing loads for my Shiloh Sharps rifles, I'm going to start tweaking the loads for this one.
