38-55 Big Game

I've also been getting very good groups with a 265-grain gas-checked cast from Jet Bullets. I have never chrono'd the load but I'm guessing it's in the 1600 fps range and groups range from 1.25 to about 1.75 for five shots at a hundred.

What powder are you using with these jet cast bullets? I've bought some but haven't had a chance to use them yet.

Barnes still makes 255gr bullets........Harold

This has been my source of Jacketed bullets. However, be careful....because:
Barnes makes no less than 3 different 255 grain bullets in almost the same diameter.
First is the 255 grain, .375" bullet designed for the 375 Winchester. It is a true .375" and has the crimping groove too far back to use in a 38-55 case.
If you try to load them, and crimp in the groove, the loaded cartridge will be too long to cycle through a M94 or Marlin 1893 action.
If you load them in the shorter 375 Winchester case, they will cycle when crimped in the groove.
Second is a 255 grain, .375" bullet with the crimping groove farther ahead on the bullet. This is also a true .375" bullet, and while it is the proper length
when loaded in 38-55 cases, it may be a bit small in diameter for some 38-55 rifles.
Third is a 255 grain, .377" bullet, with the crimping groove in the correct location for the 38-55 cases. This larger bullet will likely work best if you have a
38-55 with a groove diameter of .376" or larger. In some rare cases, the groove diameter is so generous that cast is the only solution.

would of been a golden opportunity for the lever gun this morning, my mate shot a big stag with a 9.3x62, the 286 didn't go awesomely, did its job tho.. no doubt the 375 would of penetrated thru!

keen as now for this lever gun hunt end of may
WL

The .375 Win does not have nearly the energy of the 9.3X62... if you are unhappy with the penetration of the 9.3X62 on this stag, the issue was either shot placement or bullet failure... or both... but the cartridge is most certainly superior to the .375 Win.

nah bro but a big cast pill goin a bit slower will penetrate it all day long no problem, the 286 ammo is an has been proven #### LOL not the first one to blow up in test medium or on animals.
not superior, I didn't say that ;) I just would of loved to have had the deer bedded at 40m in the sights of the 375 and penetrated right through it , is all I mean

cheers though..

What ammo/bullet was your buddy using?
its packaged here as Highland , but more recently the same stuff in blue PPU boxes, a 286gr with a few cannelures.
its impacted all of its energy onto the target I guess, he was solid animal, fat as been just out of velvet, sitting down can make them bit tougher over all, but it did get the heart .. so, yeah it did its job but if it was in a standing alert about to run scenario, I would want a bit stouter bullet for the range -50m at the time.
