Driller's Weekend this year was a great success and everyone had a great time, even with the poor weather. I arrived Friday afternoon around 3:30 pm and their was already 4 trailers and a tent setup on site, the skies were clear and the sun warm. Bill and I re-faced the 300M targets and got a crew of shooters to help us flag the range Friday evening. There was no wind to speak of and it looked like we could have a trigger pulling contest in store for us Saturday morning.
By early morning Saturday, the skies were dull and the wind was up and coming from the SE (about 4:30 to 5 o'clock) around 5 mph gusting to 8 mph, which is pretty calm for Nokomis. After the morning registration and safety meeting, we had relay 1 & 2 go to the 600 yd line. This is due to the limited parking at the 600 yd and after relay 1 was finished their 3 - 5 shot groups, they headed back to the warmth of the clubhouse and sent relay 3 to the 600 yds. I helped get the target crew setup as they were new to this format and showed the line officer's how to measure the groups with the 24" callipers I have during relay 1's turn on the line and then raced back for my turn as I was on relay 2. Bill McDonald did a great job of running the line at all the yardages except for relay 3 were I took over to allow him to shoot as well. We had a total of 30 shooters (plus 5 paid in full no-shows), 11 in FF and 19 in F Open for the Driller's Match. This group & score portion went over well and we were done and at the clubhouse by 10:45 am were we had a elk chilli going in a slow cooker. I entered the information that was recorded in the butts into the PC during lunch and watch the men enjoying the hot lunch, and then paired up the shooters into 3 relays for the afternoon's Mini Palma.
Now a true Palma is really 2+15 at 800,900 & 1000 yds, we call this the Mini Palma since we use 1/2 sized targets. A 300M DCRA target at 600 yds and a 500 yd DCRA target at 800 and 1000.
We started the Mini-Palma at 1:00 PM as planned, but due to a slight delay for some re-facing of the 300M targets for 600 yd and some missing 500 yd centers at the 800 yd, we managed to finish the afternoon portion, with relay 3 called to the line at 6:05 pm and we ended at 6:30 pm. It was sunny and warm in the afternoon Saturday, wind was coming from ESE still and was light, under 10 mph and consistent, under .75 moa of change in velocity/direction, very unusual for Nokomis winds and the scores showed this too. In past years, the winners of the mini-palma were just over 200 and just about everyone fired over that this year.
We had a young Sask shooter toss the potatoes on the BBQ after he was finished his turn at 1000 yds line and the BBQ was started. I'd like to thank the club for sponsoring the supper's fixings and trimmings.
After we had all eaten, Bill started the awards and door prizes portion and did a bang up job and had all the shooter's either smiling and laughing. First we awarded the winners their medals and WholeSale Sport's cards the club sponsored and then drew the 50/50 door prizes. Everyone present went home with something and a smile that evening and we reminded the winner's of all the door prizes to thank the sponsors of their prize.
Driller's Big Winners were....Richard Dreger will have his named added to the trophy for shooting the Smallest Group of the Day, a 2.230" 5 shot group at 600 yds and Marc Thibault will have his named added to the trophy for his F Open score of 235/270, as will Jim McInnes for his F F score of 217/270.
ISSF big winners were Dale Luchuck (the only TR shooter in this ISSF) with 263/300, Jim McInnes in FF with 295/300, and both Ian Hames and Marc Thibault shot 300/300 in F Open.
Congrats to all the winner's and thanks to everyone, including our sponsors, for making this the best Driller's event and the largest shoot we have had a Nokomis since I started shooting there, to date!

Each shooter got a Pod Lock thanks to ### as well.
I may have missed a few, but I got most of the prize winners recorded.
Sunday morning started off with a bang, thunder and raining. We delayed the start of the match due to heavy rain and by 9 or 10 am we started with 1 relay of 12 shooters shooting DCRA style on the 6 frames with ISSF targets and competitor marking. This proved wise as we did manage to fire 30 using 2+15's without getting too wet and it was getting heavier as the last shooters left the line slightly before 11 am. Winds were from the ENE at around 10-15 mph (more Nokomis like) and most of the high BC rigs needed around 2 moa of Right windage at the 300M line for the ISSF.
In total we had 1 shooter with irons, 4 FF and 7 F Open shooters for the Sunday ISSF for a total of 12 shooters(and 12 pre-paid no shows). I opted out of the ISSF since I was not going to have a second relay for 1 and Leonard came shortly after we started and I checked if he wanted to shoot a triple but he declined also.
Here is the ISSF results from Sunday....
Hope to see some of you at the next match, our Annual Prize match (aka the Provincial's) coming up July 17 thru 19. 8am reg, 9am start.
